ULTRON for Pepakura ** 04/11 paper unfold added!**

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

@ DarkJester:[/B] How tall is your 4 year old? I'll start an extra child mannequin now if you'd like; I can model out the kid suit pretty easily if I fit them to the smaller model now next to the big guy :)

Thanks for taking a look!

i was just planning to scale it down in pepakura after you released the model, but hes close to 3'8", thanks for lending your awesome skills to the rest of us

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

Someone call the medics! I just had a heart attack from the awesomeness of these wip models! (jk)

Ultron is definitely on my to do list (though actually it's on my way way way down the road to do list... I've still got to do two other costumes before, but when I do...)

Thanks for giving theses a go, if they are like your robocop files then they are sure to be top notch!

No worries, I've just found it easier in the past to scale child suits in the modeling software to compensate for their different proportions :)

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

sweet, Ive so been hoping some one would do ultron. Looks Great so far

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

Thanks for the compliments!

Not getting to put as much time into this as I'd like right now, but I did get some progress made.

Thigh and knee joint started. A lot of work ahead, but a good start. I would also like to model the knee filler panel with this section while I'm at it. Nothing crazy, just a piece with long 'tails' so it can be made, attached to the inside of the thigh's rear, and then tucked down into the rear upper shin. I guess I just don't like seeing cool suits with the big gaps if it can be avoided. The thighs should come out well, they're not symmetrical at all, more organic to the shape of the mannequin underneath. If that makes sense.

Ugh, helmet is pretty plain in the back, but it's still a work in progress. I like the four orbs in the 'mohawk' and the detail groove that run around them, but I think I'm going to make the mohawk section about half as long behind the last red orb as it is. This will open up the lower rear helmet area a lot. I was pretty psyched to incorporate a hose detail in the lower area to coordinate with the neck wrap, but we'll see. I really like the bundled-wire look that some ultron versions have through the neck area, but I want this to look good, build good, and wear well. So, I gotta figure that out, along with a removeable panel so a head can get in there. Antennas aren't a big deal right now since they are separate, but they are also in need of some work- way too plain and symmetrical.

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

im sitting here with my 4 yr old watching next avengers for the (lost count # of) time and the second ultron shows up he jumps up from the couch and yells "yeah, ultron, kick iron butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" either that means he really likes ultron or he really HATES iron man/tony stark, im thinking a little of both. oh and its not next avengers, its the ultron vs hulk movie according to him

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

@Darkjester- that's awesome :) I keep imagining a little Ultron running around, hilarious.

Not much to update, been quite busy with other stuff, but there has been some progress tonight. Remodeled the rear of the helmet (again), and think it's a big improvement over the previous style. I also reworked (again) the shoulder bells; the previous two styles just weren't working for me. I also started modeling the back details, thigh details, and tweaked the knee hinge a bit.

Totally subscribed to this!!!

laelle you are so good!!! Thanks for your hard work!

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

Thanks for the kind words! :)

Got a little more done this morning, added a panel with connected ribbing under each arm opening. I also want to bevel the abdomen inserts, but that's another project.
Then I jumped headfirst into the spine detail. I was going to add detail spheres along the ridge down the back, but at this point I think it's best to hold off. Pretty satisfied with the spine proportion, so I'm going to start the neck brace and wrap detailing tonight.

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

I'm looking at the abdomen and I'm wondering how one would actually go about building it. My initial thought is to make the raised sections out of, say, foam and connect the interior parts with fabric. So you would glue the foam on to the fabric and it would allow movement in the abdomen while still retaining the proper look. I have seen some great vinyl silver fabrics that would probably work great (as well as gold fabrics, if someone paints the costume gold in Age of Ultron style).

Thoughts?

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

Exactamundo. If I beveled the ab sections now, it would complicate the template (and building process) so I kept these with a relatively rectangular cross-section. I was thinking the raised ab sections could then be cut from thick (or stacked) foam and then glued down to whatever base. after I get the torso done, I'll also extract a template of just the torso form to be used as a pattern for the under-foam or fabric torso. Long story short, the torso 'tube' could be made, and then the ab pieces and details would be adhered to it. I think that makes it a lot easier for building AND painting.(y)thumbsup

Speaking of colors, what sounds good to you? I would really like to incorporate two colors into the suit, just to help give depth and bring out detail, but I hadn't thought too much about it.

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

By "just the torso form", you mean like a large, flat shape that can be used as a fabric template and to properly space and lay out the raised parts? That sounds great!

Personally, my plan is to make the whole thing as shiny silver as I can get it. I would love to see an all gold AU style one, but my friend I'm building this for wants it silver. But we also haven't seen Ultron "prime" in AU yet so I am wondering how he's going to look different than the gold Ultron minions we've seen. I think either color with some good black washing in the crevices would really make it pop.

You sent me a PM a while ago that I never responded to (sorry!) about the helmet details. Again, personally, I probably would build the mohawk flat regardless if the circle details are in there. But I guess it really depends on how the final version of everything looks.

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

Not too fond of the fabric aspect of a robot, I was thinking making a storm trooper like chest, with several iron man like ab sections, but that's just what I would do, and if it is left as that, I would be able to make a chest piece and add the details over it, so no worries there, I actually was about to ask if there was an update, and here is one! Great job so far, keep it up :D

Re: Ultron for Pepakura

I didn't mean making any of the major components from fabric, just the areas in between abdomen "ribs". That way you can bend at the waist. The actual "ribs" and spine would all be from foam.

Yep, so a section like the lower torso template would be nearly flat, and most everything else could be attached to that. I think that also eliminates a lot of the 'snagging' on the inside surfaces of a costume, if the inner section is fairly smooth. Maybe mentioned this, but I am also planning on sectioning the upper and lower torso so that the latter can slide up inside somewhat.

I also like the idea of a wash on the silver finish. I want to render the suit in silver with gunmetal under-details (when it's done) to see how that looks.

I would like to get the helmet file out next week. I haven't settled on an antenna, but that can always be added afterwords. :thumbsup
