Anyone here happen to know a good sewing pattern that could be adapted to become Cap's Jacket?

The closet I have found is McCalls 4745mc Civil War Jacket.

I figure without the second row of buttons and some other mods, it could work. But maybe someone knows something better.

Also, does anyone know why they went with a kevlar style helmet? Am I missing something?

Thanks.

I actually remember reading an interview with Jim Lee (I think that's the right name anyway), the costume was supposed to be more WWII inspired. Have more of a look and feel of that era. Either way, I think it's way cooler than the regular version. This would be an Awesome costume.

I can't tell from the little pic, but does the simplicity pattern have the overlapping breast? If so it might be a good starting point. You could also check chef coats and old school dentist smocks.

I had thought that too. But then shouldn't he have an M1 helmet instead of a current issue kevlar? Don't get me wrong, I like the look, but it just has never struck me as 1945. Anyway, thanks for the input guys.

The cival war pattern or on of the chef patterns, both have an overlapping front. The helmet does look mor modern than it should be. Somone didn't research well?

I am trying to get a friend to do that costume but definately will go with an WWII era helmet. One, to be more accurate to the era. Two, the kevlars are very rough texture and I do not think they would look very good painted blue.

I may have to look into this

Yeah don't know why the sculpter used a kevlar type helmet, every other time I've seen this suit it's been with a more WWII helm, although think it was a custom as I think it's a M1 as that would be a little big.

Of course, it'd be a LOT harder to make but a leather jacket in that style would be particularly awesome, and in keeping with the military's love of the A-2.

I decided to tackle this project (starting with the helmet) when I stumbled on to an older kevlar helmet at work. The rough surface was a concern of mine as well. I'm considering actually doing 2 versions of the costume. The first would be pretty much a straight forward replica of the vintage WWII inspired costume and the 2nd would reflect a more realistic looking & modern "Police Uniform" sort of look - an obvious choice for yours truly. The difference between the two would be minimal. Simply change the brown leather pouches & green nylon belts & accesories with black nylon belts and accesories. I would probably use a darker blue rather than the almost-sky blue color too for the modern day outfit - the blue & black color combination is pretty much the standard these days. I'd go with the regulation black military boots for the modern uniform vs. the brown leather boots of the vintage costume. Other than that the two are pretty similar. Oh yeah, the leather cap would be exchanged with some sort of modified SWAT mask/cap for the modern version too. All in all it looks to be a fun project.

I'd love to see what you guys come up with, and in the meantime I'm going looking for that pattern.

Got started today, so I figured I would turn this into a W.I.P. thread.

I decided to go old school and use an M1 helmet instead of kevlar. Picked one up at the the surplus.

Sanded 'er down and hit it with a bit of CLR to clear any rust spots.

I wanted the A and the insignia in back to have some dimension, so I lasercut them out of .04" styrene. My plan was to use contact adhesive to attach them to the helmet, but even though they were so thin, they didn't want to stay with the curve of the helmet. So I laid them in place and then hit them with the heat gun until they "assumed" the shape of the helmet. Here it is with the helmet primered and insignia ready.

I also wanted the 3d elements to fit in seamlessly, so before I re-textured the helmet, I glued the insignia in place and then masked them off.

Here is everything done. I think it turned out pretty sweet.

I've got my leggings, pants, and jacket pattern on the way(just have to learn to sew :( ).

Next comes the shield, and then I will start working on the mask. I think I will use some kind of vac-formed shell with leather applied to the exterior.''

Enjoy, comments welcome.

I love it. I am a total geek for all the Ultimate characters....the realistic approach is far more interesting than the traditional Spandex look.

I can't wait to see the rest of the suit.

regarding the mask, there was a guy here who did a WW2 version of batman(or started on it) and did the mask that looks very similar to this one. You may want to look it up.

Great work on the helmet. I just picked up my own authentic G.I.'s helmet from General Grevious last night. He was nice enough to sand it down to the metal, fill in the dents and coat it for me so it would be ready to paint. I wasn't sure if I wanted to paint on the emblams or try the raised look of a styrene application. You're photo's & tutorial were fantastic. Do you have the "A" template already, or did you draw it up yourself? One thing is for sure, you should get an "A" for this project. :thumbsup
