And it is a Modern Props rental that appears regularly in SF movies whenever a futuristic gadget of nebulous purpose is required.
The end pieces have been identified as pool skimmers though the precise model is not yet determined. This picture of the ubiquitous device in action might help:
Looks to me as if the prop is redressed periodically, possibly between each rental to avoid looking too much the same or maybe you can pay them extra to redress it or maybe the parts just come off in case they are in the way of a shot.
At any rate it has been repainted a few times.
Anyone got any idea what the pie-tin like things on the ends might be. They look like maybe some sort of brake assembly to me.
