Tyrell building original prop

I know, noone would be crazy enough to attempt to build this replica, but i still would like to post these photos..

IF any person out of his mind is willing to try to do a replica on this one, i am more than willing to go to NY again and take AS MANY Photos as required. just to let you know :lol

as many of you know, the original TYRELL Building is in the Museum of Moving Image in NYC. i happened to be there last year for a visit and took some photos of the building. Unfortunately, the lights were terrible in the hall where the prop was displayed and it was forbidden to take photos with flash. anyways.. this is the best i could do..

(i posted these photos on www.propsummit.com under the nickname "i lost R2" so if for any reason the photos dont show up here, you can go check them there)

Okay lets start Id'ng pieces! lol.
Srsly though I may have to have a crack at this. Possibly in a smaller scale but you never know. :)

i ll be in NY around mid may so i was not kidding when i said i can take as many photos as needed!! let me know if you really would give it a shot :)

I can tell you that there was a HUGE amount of photo-etched brass used on that building. When I worked for both Greg Jein and Boss, the stuff was in about every supply drawer I opened! And it was very thick!

It's a definate possibility. I'm starting a college course again in the Autumn so this would be a good summer project. I probably wouldn't do full SS, this looks what? 3-4ftx3ft? The photo-etch alone would run about $500 just for the windows. I think a 1.5 x 1ft version would be a nice lit display backer for a BR collection. I could kit it too, with lights!

That's the closeup section that was used at the beginning of the film where you zoom in to the office. You also see it again in the flyover approach when Deckard goes there to interview Rachel. And you see it at the end when Roy and Sebastian travel up in the elevator car. It's about 5' wide x 4' high (-ish).

Mark Stetson got the thing after filming wrapped and kept it for years until his wife ordered him to clean out the garage. He donated to the museum years ago. Nice to see that it is on display. Looks like they put in some neon or fluorescent lighting. A couple of pieces are missing - the office 'set' where Holden interviews Leon (sold at a Profiles auction last year), and Tyrell's office, which went behind the big windows in the middle of the building. (I don't know where that one went.)

I have some of the detail strips from the front, and you occasionally see castings of the top and the elevator car pop up every once in a while.

Aren't the elavators functional on that thing? Glad they're preserving it very well. It's a shame when classic films lose all their heritage. Hope this piece lasts for many many more years to come and from what you've said sounds to me it will. Thanks for sharing this and who's gonna tackle this thing?

Doesnt look like the elevators are functional at all, they seem quite well glued... or is it me?

I believe only one worked. There was a worm gear behind the face of the model that was controlled by a stepper motor. As it turned, it made the elevator car move up and down the track. There should be a small slit for an arm to go from the elevator car to the nut on the worm gear and would be hidden by the elevator car itself.

Love those pics thanks.

Friend and I have wanted to do a partial model.

Something more like this:

We have photo etch from the film and an elevator.

Think there would be interest?

i am pretty sure many people would be interested. you can count me in for sure.. how about expanding the "section" a little bit? as i said, i will visit there again this spring and can take close ups depending on where you would want to model.. but i really believe it would be very cool if you could just slice the thing from top to bottom and maybe choose a certain row so that it looks complete regarding its height... what do you think?

Hey, wait a minute - is that .... Gumby in the background of that display?

Could he be the 'missing' Replicant that has been pondered all these years?

Anyways - kinda like the idea of doing a partial section. Here is one of the 'detail' strips I have.

If you compare it to the frame grab that was posted earlier -

- you'll notice that the detail matches the area between the two elevator cars......but the weird thing is that it is reversed in the frame grab. I wonder if they flopped the shot? (Or mastered a Left and Right 'handed' version of the detail strip.)

I have another strip that has different detail and is a bit wider. I need to see where on the prop it goes. (I researched them when I got them, but it was so long ago, I forgot where the stuff goes!)

I have every intention of making this, once the Blimp is done (and a few other projects).... I have all of the PE art scanned by a wise and handsome man here on the RPF, and will do a run for the pyramid when the time comes... Frank - team up? I'd love to get copies of the details you have, or borrow them for a remaster/recreation?

No rush - but this could be awesome if done right!

I'd love to see this done, and had been helping someone who shall remain nameless (NATHAN!!) as he had this as a personal project.

I say we throw him under the bus, driver over him and blatantly steal his idea.

With Gene's blessing ofcourse.
