Two Communicators (Showoff Thread with Pics)

These have been in the works for months, and after a lot of research, and trial and error, I'm finally happy with them. My first two completed props: a TOS Communicator and a Star Trek XI Communicator.

The TOS communicator is an upgraded Diamond Selects comm. I chose to make it a Delta, because I felt I could make all the necessary aluminum parts myself. It was a challenge because I was armed only with a dremel and hand tools..!

The challenge in upgrading the Playmates Start Trek XI comm was in reshaping the lid. Using little pieces of styrene and some Squadron Green, I made some small changes to give it a more streamlined look.

Wow..very clean builds!...esp the TOS...couldn't imagine a DST could look that good! Then again, the XI looks resculpted, refined, and really cool.

These look real nice. I need to go pick up a XI comm since they seem to be on clearance and try out a mod, too.

Hey MccTrek ...

How do you get the lid off the ST XI comm without breaking it?

The lid is held in by pins that can be pulled out with pliers. The trick is to use a screwdriver pry them out enough to get a good grip on them.

I'm especially impressed with your work on the Trek XI comm, It no longer looks like a 5 dollar plastic toy but a professionally built prop.

I finally did my ST:XI comm based on this screen used photo.

Here's mine.
