TUSKEN RAIDER costume fabrics

I'd like to go over this a bit, as I'm making a costume.

I know about the cotton twill (Ralph Loren or equivalent) blanket. Though it looks to me like the twill is a little heavier in reference photos than what the blankets have?

How about the outer cloak for the "hero" Raider? I always thought of it as just a waffle weave fabric, but looking at it closer, it appears to be bumps instead of depressions?

How about the sash?

Anyone have any good sources for these fabrics? I've been combing ebay for the blankets but haven't had too much luck.

Ok... should give people just a little time to respond :)

Now, about the material. Im not 100% sure. But I used to do judo, and the jackets they use for their gi tops are made of a heavier material than others. It looks very simular; a good place to start anyway.
:)

I´m really interested in finding a accurate weave fabrik as my mask would look even better as a lifesize bust but unfortunatly i can´t contribute anything more than what you already pointed out.

Bumping this to the top for more input and two additional pictures though...

Question on fabrics. did any of you dye your fabric once you gor it? Any particular way you like better when doing it?

I noticed that the outer robe has a look to it similar to berber carpet. Interestingly, the Berber people are an ethnic group from Africa and are also found in Tunisia. I wonder if the material was sourced locally during filming. The other observation I have about the mask material is that it looks similar to the denim used in WWII British Khaki denim. We know they used military bandoliers and other military items for vader, so it wouldn't surprise me they used that for some of the masks.

I'm in the same boat you are. I'll let you know if I find anything. To me it almost looks like furniture fabric... but who knows. There is a website where you can ask fabric experts to ID fabrics, I actually went on there today and submitted a photo of a raider cloak. So we'll see what they say, if anything.

Why can't anybody figure this out? Someone manufactured those fabrics. John Mollo & co were responsible for most of the costumes in Star Wars and had to source their materials from somewhere, most likely around the UK. They also rented wardrobe from Bermans & Nathans evidently . It would be great if anyone who was around in those days could chime in here and share some info. I'm sure that the natural heavy thread twill fabric has a name or even a nick name. I've been looking around for a long time now and no one seems to know anything about it. People have settled for monks cloth etc. but never have went past that and sourced the actual outer cloak material used for the Tusken Raiders in A New Hope. Does anybody have any clue about this material or it's name?

Outer robe : ralph lauren blanket , found at marshalls . Comes in a cream white coler , dye to be used : pearl grey (powder) x1 , taupe (liquid) x1 , sunshine orange (liquid) 1 teaspoon for a reddish hue .
Inner robe : Monks cloth , found at any fabric store . Dye to be used : tan (liquid) x1 , pearl grey (powder) x1
Do not under any circumstances use burlap !!! You will want to have 2 different shades of brown for the inner and outer robes to show depth , these materials will fold to your body and flow when you move . Let me know if you have any questions , I know this post is quite old but thought I would add my opinion . Thanx , Derek . FB Page : Tusken Raider Clothing

The actual fabric should look like this...The diagonal twill is heavier and more pronounced. Yes...it's different than the trusty ole Ralph Lauren blanket that everyone's been using for years now.

I work at hospitals and used a blanket from work for my outer robe...doesn't match the ralph lauren exactly but it has the right vibe.

I'm really struggling to find something suitable here in Australia - I totally agree with you jtechlove - what Im trying to find seems different to what folk seem to be opting for. As far as I can see, no-one has come up with a decent replica for this..., or am I wrong?

If anyone knows of a supplier, please help - happy to have it shipped from anywhere!

If if you haven't done so, take look at upholstery fabrics. I've used them for my kids jedi tunic because I wanted something with texture. Some of them are pretty stiff but you might find one that wears well.

I know it's not perfect - but it's getting close (apart from the need to dye), but I came across an old rug when I was cleaning up today and the weight/pattern is getting close. It was from Ikea about 8 years ago and was in the cheap and nasty range (about 40AUD at the time if I remember right).

It's by no means exact, but bleached, died and weathered, I'm sure this could probably pass relatively close?!
