Truly epic animated series... Recommendations?

I suggest the first 2 seasons of Ben 10: Alien Force for a bit of sci-fi. Don't go beyond season 2, that when it gets bad. Real bad. Also, take a look at Inuyasha. I consider it to be an excellent, if long (200 episodes), anime.

Batman the animated series, superman the animated series, justice league, justice league unlimited, batman: beyond, If you want weird but R rated go with neon genesis evangelion (they're redoing the series as 3 movies with new stories and characters), Ghost in the shell: standalone complex and stand alone complex: 2nd gig.

My Ex-Wife was REALLY in to Inuyasha and what I watched of it with her seemed pretty well done. I made her the necklace of subjugation from that as a gag gift one holiday years ago and she still has it on display at her new house.

I'd recommend some old school stuff.

Space Battleship Yamato (a.k.a. Star Blazers, but watch the Japanese version instead).
Gundam 0079 You can intercut this with the 08th MS Team, but they're REALLY different in terms of animation style.
Macross (the original)

If you can get through the older style animation and focus on the story, you'll dig these.

Later Gundam series are a lot of fun, too, particularly the UC series. You could watch, in this order, and spend hundreds of hours on what's essentially a single storyline:

Gundam 0079, 08th MS team, Gundam 0083, Gundam Z (aka Zeta gundam), Gundam ZZ, Char's Counterattack. After that, the UC stuff continues, but there are some time jumps. Unicorn Gundam is supposed to fit in there, but I don't know if they've finished releasing everything. Gundam F91 is kind of weak, because it was intended as a series but ended up being just a movie, so it's really jumbled. A shame, too, because there was a ton of potential for the story. V Gundam is amazing, but the animation style is a bit odd.

then you get to the other Gundam series like Gundam Wing, Gundam X, Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny, Gundam 00, etc. They're usually pretty good, but the UC stuff is a single continuous storyline with somewhat repeating beats between stories.

There's also Fist of the North Star, although that's not so mcuh "epic" as it is "long."

If you love Batman TAS but also prefer something with more of an arc story, then you can stay in the DC Animated Universe and go with the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series. In PARTICULAR the last two seasons, which have VERY distinct and awesome arc stories in both of them.

Also, Tron: Uprising was excellent, but has been cancelled, so you'd be ending the 19 episodes on a semi-cliffhanger.

Even though this thread is pretty old, can't hurt but to give people looking for something to watch some suggestions.

Going to suggest some of my favorite animes. Two of the really popular ones right now are Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) and Hataraku Maō-sama (The Devil Is A Part-Timer).

For nostalgia, I love the Robotech, Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman, G-Force) and Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers) series. Some of my other favorites are Gurren Lagann, Elfen Lied, Deadman Wonderland, Death Note, Kiddy Grade and Persona 4.

And you definitely can't go wrong with Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Attack on Titan is awesome as is the other new series that's currently airing, Gargantia.

Another epic anime series, and definitely one of the best in a long while, is Sword Art Onlne, the story centers around a teenage boy who finds himself stuck (along with some 10,000 other people) in a VR MMO in where you can't log out and in game death equals real life death. The only way to get out is for the players to beat all of the levels of the game and defeat the final boss, in the meanwhile the players develop actual relationships in the game and because of the crafting system in the game some players don't actually go out and fight preferring to work as merchants selling the things they craft in the game.

One title that I really enjoyed that, while not epic, was very enjoyable, it's Girls und Panzer. It's set on an alternate Earth where a bunch of national all girls schools are on aircraft carriers and a very popular sport is tanking. Tanking is pretty simple, schools form teams and compete against other schools "fighting" each other in WW II era tanks, any tank that saw service in or was at least developed during WW II is eligible. They've somehow created a system that allows the tanks to fire real shells that approximates their actual firepower without actually penetrating even the lightest tank armor and relies on some kind of computer system to calculate damage and determine if the shot would have actually killed the tank if it were real. It's a lighthearted and fun show and a must watch for tank buffs.

For a blast from the past I really enjoyed the old Disney afternoon cartoon series from the 90s like Darkwing Duck, Duck Tales, and Tail Spin, those were some great shows.

One word: MACROSS.

I bought the DVD of that show and am watching the episodes right now (I'm on the one where they go up against all the Russian armor in the battle in the snow, really looking forward to seeing the episode where they go up against a team with Panthers and a Maus, all inside a town, I've caught part of that fight on you tube.). It's a really neat show!

Random question:

Has anyone actually watched any anime on Netflix where it was Japanese dialogue and subs? Or are all series done with English dubbing?

I'm surprised cartoon network got Sword Art so fast for toonami. Did we already mention Excel Saga? If you like things odd and funny it's for you and there's a 2 episode spin off called Puni_Puni_Poemy that's band in australia and new zealand with their odd laws on stuff.

It is a great show, isn't it? If nothing else it's great to see all of these WW II tanks so nicely animated and duking it out with each other. Gotta love how the main school's team is made up of such a mish-mash of tanks where all all of the other school's teams consist of tanks from just one nationality. It really shows skill when your best tanks are a PzKfw IV (mid war?) and a Stug III (or was it a Hetzer) and you're up against Josef Stalins, KVs, Tigers, King Tigers, and Mauses.

CN already got SAO? Wow, that was fast. Hope it does well, well enough that the powers that be back in Japan decide to do another season of it if only for the US market.

It started last week i think on Toonami, of course it's on at a terrible time of 2am. CN isn't known for good choices but they're promoting it heavily. If they'd done this with Thundercats we'd have another season.
