Tron Legacy Guard Concept costume

Re: Tron Legacy Guard Concept costume (WIP)

thanks all. I'm starting a Anon costume for my 4 year old for sdcc. Mod podge is white, but dries clear and stil dries with a matte finish.

Are you doing the helmet? I am about to resin an assembled pep model (3rd try) hoping it turns out well, bet yours will rock though you guard costume is awesome :)

If I have time. I got the pdo file, but don't know what to do with it yet.
I'll probably pep it and then glue shaped foam pieces on top rather than fiberglass. I don't have time or patience to bondo and paint a kid's helmet.
I was going to modify a pleather jacket at first, but I decided to do an all out foam and El tape costume. Convinced him to go white instead of red. Red EL just doesn't show except in the dark.

Re: Tron Legacy Guard Concept costume (WIP)

So the mod podge helped the foam stay in certain shapes and look rubbery?

Hmmm... I like it... One question though, after airbrushing it black again, does the paint easily rub off?

Very nice costume by the way.

Re: Tron Legacy Guard Concept costume (WIP)

The only thing mod podge does is fill in the pores of the foam, so the paint (plastidip in this case) has a smooth finish and not look like painted foam. The rubbery finish is all from the plastidip. Durability will depend on the paint. Plastidip will rub off if you really try, but using multiple layers of mod podge and plastidip will prevent any color showing through.
A thin top layer of mod podge will help seal the paint too.

Awesome!

A 32oz bottle of matte finish original blend mod podge is only $14 on Amazon, and I found the plasti-dip paint in a spray can at a local hardware shop just down the street from me! But I also found it online in the spray can as well for just $7. Do you advise the spray can?

I am excited now! Did you use just regular 1/8" thick craft foam sheets or such? I want to use rather thin foam because I am using multiple layers on each armor panel... Or, at least contemplating it... I may just use electrical tape on the back of the lighting components and seal the plates up with a fabric backing like you, instead of covering the back in another layer of foam, if it can at all help with the thickness aspect, then I may just use thicker foam for durability.

Oh, and the mod podge is what holds the foam panels in certain positions, like, the shoulder pads being curved, right?

Sorry for all of the questions, this is my first costume like this as well, and I just think your costume is awesome.

This is amazing. I'm planning on making a Tron costume as well and the way you made your armor is bound to be super helpful. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Tron Legacy Guard Concept costume (WIP)

I know this will sound absolutly strange, but you could run contacts from the main power source to the fingertips in the gloves to power the staff/disc while in hand. that way it eliminates the need for more inverters.

It is possible to do, but runs the risk of a fair jolt if you touch the contacts. I was experimenting with the EL wire making a decorative shoulder piece for my wife's costume. I had left the contacts bare with the intention of coating them with Plasti dip and managed to touch both contacts by accident. I was quite surprised at how bad it was given that It was only a 9v battery so I wouldn't like to find out what a 12v jolt would be like and I suspect you would need something around that to power a staff and your costume.

since the batons are hollow, have you thought about replacing one of the switches with a 9v and power button? a simple press on/ press off or press on/release off?

i totally understand the desire for it to light up as soon as you touch it, however i think a press on/release off button would do that better since you would have to touch the baton in a specific place to get the contacts to line up anyway.

talking about Flynn (kevin), i met the pattern maker for his outfit last weekend. perhaps those that are interested in making replicas can get patterns. if i get anything useful i'll start a thread.

In the meantime, sorry for the off topic, moderate thread jack.

Azurial, i'd like to see your light up baton! Make it!

The staff is self contained with a push button switch, (2) AA batteries, an inverter and 12' of EL wire. It is a hollow 1" aluminum tube w/ pvc caps on the outside.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but did you paint the PlastiDip on or use the spray can PlastiDip? I'm wondering which method produces more even coats.

Also, has anyone successfully sewn pieces of foam together for areas that need to be able to withstand movement? If so, how did it hold up?

First off I just have to say amazing job, this is just incredible work. I do have one question on one side you have EL wire running all the way down but on the other side is just stops, was that a deliberate decision or what? To me it just seems incomplete with it stopping like that. Besides that is it very cool and impressive.

It's not incomplete. That's the way it looks in the first concept picture and the movie as well
