Frankly, that bugs me. That's more of what's wrong with hollywood today than anything else. God forbid you just make a good movie, but we gotta get toys out for it, gotta get that breakfast serial, turn it into a tv show, and don't forget the obligatory video game, etc, etc, etc. Why not try and make a good movie and then if it's good - go from there.
Was POTC a planned mini-industrial revolution thing? I thought it was just a movie they made that exploded, then they went from there.
I totally understand, but it isn't really a new phenomenon. If we take the wayback machine to 1937, the release of Snow White saw one of the biggest merchandising efforts, with product on retailers shelves when the movie was released.
