Tristan from Stardust

Stinky Dragon

Well-Known Member
I've decided to start putting together a Tristan costume from Stardust, but I'm not very good at recognizing fabrics, so I was wondering if I could get a little help. Help with any part of the costume would be great. I'm fairly sure the coat lining is a yellow satin. Also, any help with identifying some suitable patterns to modify for this would be wonderful. Finally, if I could get some additional screenshots from anyone I'd appreciate it. Specifically one when Shakespeare is giving Tristan the clothes where you can see the collar of the undershirt. Oh, and I'm looking to make the costume from the end of the movie, after he's been outfitted by Shakespeare.

Here's a link to a gallery with lots of nice high res shots:

Thanks!

I'll compile a list of helpful links here for anyone else interested in doing this costume:

Re: Fabric questions- Tristan from Stardust

The Jacket looks to be a natural colored Linen. Probably medium weight to heavy. You can expect to spend $11-$15 a yard on it and need about 4 yards for the coat. The lining is probably simply a lining fabric. If you're on a budget, poly lining will get you by, and probably comes in the widest range of colors, but rayon will feel better and will be easier to work with. The collar is likely a velvet as this was a common for this style of coat.

This pattern looks like a good base. http://www.lafnmoon.com/frock_coat.html
Looks like this is a doble breasted version, and there will definitely be some alterations to make to the lapel, as Tristan's is much larger than any of these. There are also some details on the back of the coat you'll have to work out. Someone also may have a link to a better pattern for this that might eliminate the guesswork on the lapel.

Good luck.

Re: Fabric questions- Tristan from Stardust

Thanks for the link and fabric tips! Would the vest be made of a similar material? Or maybe wool? Also, it's a little hard to see in the pictures on the site, but the undershirt is a lot like a pirate-type shirt. Would that be a thinner linen?

Edit: I found this site which has some good info on the costume: http://www.queenc.com/tristan/construction.html

From that it looks like the vest is made of leather and the undershirt is a very thin cotton.

There ya go. Off to a good start. And that link you provided gave me a great resource for linens online.

Re: Fabric questions- Tristan from Stardust

Actually, that pic makes me think that the shirt is either cotton gauze or hankie linen.

Re: Fabric questions- Tristan from Stardust

Yeah, I'm thinking cotton gauze as well. It looks like a fairly standard style shirt. Maybe some Pirates of the Caribbean costumers can chime in?

Also, I've added a list of links to the first post in case anyone else is looking to work on this.

Re: Fabric questions- Tristan from Stardust

hah, I was thinking cotton gauze UNTIL I saw that pic...that sheen is what made me think it was a silk or something else because cotton gauze just does not catch the light at all.

I think the sheen you're referring to may be a trick of the light in that pic. Otherwise, linen does have certain amount of sheen to it as well due to its waxy surface. This is most surely hankie linen or gauze. You can tell by the way it drapes and (most importantly) wrinkles. It takes a lot for silk to wrinkle like that, whereas linen especially does that from just breathing on it. Not too mention the fact that most costume designers have a love on for linen shirts.

Here's a possible pattern http://www.butterick.com/item/B5008.htm?tab=costumes&page=1
Buy it instore at a Hancock's They're usually on sale at 40% off or better.

I used to have a simple directions for colonial shirt patterns that would work wonderfully. Sadly, I don't know where it is right now. I really should find that and work it into an instructable or something.

Re: Fabric questions- Tristan from Stardust

yeah...I was thinking it was probably just a lighting thing. I would probably do the undershirt out of linen, or if you want to spend the money, flax! heh. I know that at one point I had instructions on how to make that style of shirt...but I buried the file somewhere in my pile of back-ups, if you still don't have a pattern for the undershirt in like say a few weeks, I'll dig for it. I kind of have a project with a deadline that's looming, can't focus on anything else until that's done.

I appreciate the help with the patterns! I think I'll be getting one sometime this week, but if not, I'll definitely take you up on that offer PadawanLearner. After a quick trip to Joann's fabric today, I'm pretty sure it is a cotton gauze, and if not, cotton gauze is close enough for me! :lol It's got the right wrinkly look to it, and with a little weathering and some light tea dyeing, I think it will look pretty good!

Sorry for the double post, but after having gotten the fabric and patterns for the undershirt I decided to move on to working out the boots. I'm just going to be adding to some cheap Redwings I got a while ago, and I'll post my progress as I work on those, but for now I need a little help finding the right buckles. The ones on the boots look to be about 1" center bar roller buckles, but the problem is that at least at Tandy leather, the buckles look slightly off. The corners are more pointed than it looks on the boots...

Here are the boots:

and here are Tandy's closest buckles:

Anyone know a good place to get buckles that might have what I'm looking for?

After looking at it again, I realized that I got the size of the buckle wrong. They're actually 3/4" buckles. I had originally measured from the outside of the buckle (which is 1"), but I finally realized the buckles themselves are named based on the size of the strap they fit... duh! Anyway, I went ahead and ordered some Tandy buckles off ebay and they turned out to be perfect. Based on the product shots from their site it looked like the sides had a bit of a curve to them, but that's not the case. I still don't think these are exact (the prong, or whatever you call it seems a little wider than the ones on the boots) but they're certainly close enough for me. Now I'm just waiting for my leather to come in!

Another double post, but I thought I'd give a quick update. I finally got the leather in to start on the boots, so I'll put up pictures as I work on those. For now, though, I just got in my belt and scabbard from Strongblade, and it's beautiful! I'm still debating getting the sword or not, but if the scabbard is any indication I'm sure it's top notch.

Just in case anyone was interested, I finally finished the boot covers (more like gaiters or spats I suppose) for now. Later I'll scuff them up some, and probably add a tiny bit of brown paint since the originals look to be dark brown instead of black. This was my first time doing any leatherwork and it was pretty fun. The leather I got was a little too thick for this... probably better for hardening and using for armor, :lol but I think they turned out alright. Anywho, here they are:

Those look really good. Wish my first leatherwork looked like that. Maybe just a bit too thick, yes. What weight leather did you go with?

Thanks! It was 8/9oz. It was a scrap I saw on ebay with plenty of room for the covers as well as all the straps, so I just went for it. At least now I'll be impervious to shin kicks! :lol
