A while back I started a thread discussing the various bags and cases used on Star Trek.
A friend of mine threw down the challenge for me to come up with six cases for him and his friends to use at conventions while in costume. So not wishing to shy away from a challange, I started doing research on the various rucksacks and hard cases that we see in the show and also how feasible it would be to make them before an up coming convention in May.
As most of the cases they used are no longer in production. I settled on the question. "If I was working on the show now, what would I buy in 2012? Something easily convertible and not too expensive"
Finding the brush metal vinyl was the biggest hurdle as here in England I was just not able to find any! Thank goodness for Ebay! The chrome stripes are automotive decorative pipping, the labels and graphics are decals, which I designed myself, based on the designs I had seen used on trek cases in the show. The "Restricted Access" label is courtesy of my friend Dietrich Kerner in Germany. Who's website is a treasure chest full of goodies
Which he very graciously gave me permission to dig through and use what ever I liked with his blessing. Thanks Dietrich!!
Half way through the project, he asked if they could have straps. So after a little messing around, I devised a method of having the straps attach inside the case and exit via a small slit. So that they would still look futuristic. By sewing bars inside the ends of the straps, the fabric can not pass through the narrow slits I cut in the case body. I thought having the strap and harness on the out side would detract from the general 24th century look.
