I’ve had this prop bouncing around in my head for 20 years, and I finally decided to make a replica. This is the Priest’s Treasure Map from 2002’s “The Count of Monte Cristo.” Dantés follows the map to find the lost Spada family treasure, which he uses to seek vengeance against all who have wronged him.

The replica is hand-inked and painted on aged leather. Similar to the Goonies map, it features a piece of string that can be used to roll it up. I painstakingly used screen captures for reference.

I‘ve searched the RPF and other forums, but I’ve never seen someone tackle this — unless I somehow missed it? A memorable prop and a fun project.

Hello there
I hope this reply of mine finds you well.
Aftwr i stumbeled on this post of yours I've had this thing stuck in my head. So I got in touch with this guy from Spain who's on Etsy and seems like he managed to pull it. I'm waiting for mine to arrive.

I am the original maker of this replica, and the Etsy seller you are working with stole my design. You can see from my post above, I said that I've never seen this made anywhere, so I guarantee that any sellers or Etsy shops you see were created after my post appeared in Jan 2023.

Although I worked closely with screen captures, there are some elements of the map that are not fully visible onscreen and had to be inferred and guessed at, and so there are a few unmistakable tell-tale signatures that make it very clear this seller replicated my work. In fact, there are a couple tiny details this maker missed, so his replica is still less accurate than mine.

A few folks have reached out to me for a replica and I'd have been glad to make you one, but I realize I didn't explicitly post this as being for sale. No big deal, that's the nature of the prop replica game and I'll take it as a form of flattery that someone ripped off my design.

I am almost tempted to buy one just so that I can have a replica of my own replica. I guess it's a rite of passage in the maker world that sooner or later someone will capitalize on your work! I'll probably see it popping up on more and more shops. But I am unquestionably the originator of this replica.

You totally should buy one! That'd be funny to have a replica of your own replica, and down the line they keep getting more and more inaccurate, like the telephone game. Before you know it, it's a copy of a Monte Cristo sandwich recipe.
