Trashcan plastic, best glue to use?

I'm using plastic cut from a trashcan to skin a project and superglue doesn't hold it.

Anyone have an idea what glue I should be using? This is for plastic to plastic, and plastic to wood.

rivets and screws.

As far as I know, trashcans are made of materials that are meant to stay clean and have nothing stick to them.

Clonesix is right. I sell trashcans in my store and I think they're made of polyethylene which is a real pain to get our barcode stickers to stay on.

However you could try scuffing up the mating surfaces with sandpaper as this will give a better "key" for the adhesive. I would use a good two part epoxy...........but still no guarantees, sorry.

That might be tough. A lot of your plastic trashcans are molded from polypropylene or polyethylene with by design are highly resilient to most chemicals. Which includes glues and paints.

Like the others say, mechanical fasteners. Or get yourself some different plastics.

The only thing that works for gluing polyehtylene together is a very special, very expensive glue by 3M, and it still does not compare to epoxy or CA.
Stickers/decals can stick well to PE, though, and you could glue your other part to the surface of the sticker.
If you flash the plastic surface quickly with a flame before applying the sticker, the surface tension in the plastic will change temporarily and the sticker can get more grip.

You might try one one of the "hot" solvents like Ambroid pro-weld. I know with styrene, it melts the plastic and two pieces become one, almost instantaneously. I use it on models all the time. Absolutely incredible stuff.

I have had some luck with Barge all purpose cement. I get it at Tandy Leather. Sticks to polypropylene. Check it on a test piece 1st as it is high in solvent content.

have you tried using sintra? i use it quite abit and can be formed with heat and superglue works a treat with it

I've heard of the stuff, but there's no source near me that carries it.

I might just change to styrene, this trashcan plastic takes way to much work to glue down without resorting to special adhesives like the 3M or Barge.

Super glue and Liquid nails are my friends. :)

Not sure if the buckets I use are made of the same material, but paint, epoxy, even resin won't stick on it, until I did the following:

Wipe down with acetone, then rough up using coarse sandpaper, around 320/400 grit before the acetone dries completely. Work on a small section at a time.

If you wanna paint it you can smooth it out with finer sandpaper after the above treatment.

Hope that helps.

I learned much to late about "Adhesion Promoter" spray. I have got it and am going to try it on PP now.
I don't expect it to work at all on PE, though.

I haven't actually tried it on that kind of plastic, but my gut is telling me that hot glue would work.

Nope. Goop=No, 2 part epoxy=No, CA=No, Styrene glue=Heck No, Gorilla Glue/Elmer's equivalent=No.

Trust me. When I did my Boba and tried to make the knees using this plastic I was about to go on a killing spree I was getting so fed up.

Switch to Sintra. Can be bought at most sign shops. Shop around tho, look for a 40-45 range for a 4x6 sheet. Can be found cheaper at places that specialize in plastic like GE polymer or something, but they usually require a minimum order of two sheets and I've never needed that much at one time.

Go to the dented helmet and do a search on sintra and you will find all kinds of amazing things that have been made out of it!
