TOS USS Constellation (AMT studio model replica)

This would undoubtedly eclipse the original in almost every way that counts. Youve done such a fine job that I think this really proves that these studio utilized kits can become accurate replicas. And with the amount of interpretation required to finish there's still some room for creativity.

The base is an amazing compliment but I don't think you need the plaque.

Thanks Paul. I appreciate that. I suppose if I had drilled the stand hole in the dead center and mounted the maw around it there, a plaque wouldn't have been needed. But, it looks a little naked on one side without something and just a maw on the other side. I may change what I have there for a plaque to something better (as it looks a little small), but I'll have to think about that somewhat. Of course, I've also got plenty of time to decide on that before Wonderfest rolls around in May.

Oh, and thanks for posting pics! For whatever reason, I don't find myself watching linked videos very often.

LOL, no problem. I mainly shot the videos because it was something new I was trying and it helps to at least get my thoughts across. I admit I don't always have time to check other videos either, since it can take time out to do, time which I might need for something else.

I thought I would give this a minor bump after the recent studio scale discussion. I am not trying to re-hash that thread of course since the mods closed it for a reason obviously (as it has been asked and answered numerous times before). But, as my model shows, it qualifies as "studio scale" since this kit is exactly what the effects guys used for the original episode.

Technically, one could probably build an MPC 1/41 scale X-Wing and build it like one of the X-Wings (or likely one X-Wing shot several times) seen briefly in the hyperspace exit scene in ROTJ and it would still qualify as studio scale (although they didn't look all that well built IMHO).

So some modelers might consider it "cheating" to go this route, but my point is not all studio scale replicas have to be expensive or heavily kitbased from original parts. Even the effects studios have used model kits as is from time to time and these potentially make nice projects if the right one comes along.

If anything commercial kits used by fx teams would be a sub category of Studio Scale. Just because it's simpler than scratch building and sourcing hundreds worth of kits doesn't mean it's a cheat. These models do belong in this category.

Now I could see the grey area on things like that X Wing. Unless you were painting it to look exactly like theirs then yes it should be here, but why bother? And what about a mustard yellow Stargazer? Technically it's a set decoration/prop but it's also the study model for the fx miniature. So does that make it equal to the early Star Wars concept models we find here?

These are all questions that can be answered one at a time by the mods as soon as we build them. Either way these are fun and can be relatively bargain builds.

Again, it's a great model and true to what is seen on screen.

I don't spend enough time in the studio scale section it seems. I missed this totally.

Your painting and weathering are always top notch.

I'm not a big fan of necro bumping threads (especially my own). But, since William Windom passed away this week (or was it last), I thought I would give this thread a bump with my model as a tribute to the actor who played Decker in "The Doomsday Machine". I would say if it wasn't for Windom's performance, I don't think the episode would have been quite as memorable as it was (cheesy effects with a trashed AMT model kit not withstanding).

And a belated thanks to Ozzy for the nice compliment. :)

I'm glad for the bump, since I missed this thread over the winter. Nice work. That base is a great idea.

Yeah, thanks for the bump, and thanks for the videos, as well. I agree sometimes its a little more time-consuming to watch, but I have enjoyed the parallel narrative. Nothing wrong with even more info!
