I'm pretty sure I've seen this posted here, but despite my diligence in searching, there are over 500 threads on TOS phasers so I couldn't find it. Forgive me if it's a repost.
I followed the DIY on youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfj1n8vPWCE )for installing a working laser into an Art Asylum TOS phaser, only I changed a couple things.
I did *not* tear apart a blue-ray player for the diode. I wanted something brighter than that purply blue dim beam, and although I was tempted to put in a red burning diode, I decided that green would just be cool. So I did that.
I used a $10.99 5mW green laser pointer off Ebay for the diode. Popping out the diode was a PITA - used vicegrips to pull off the end cap of the laser pointer, then a socket screwdriver shaft to push it out of the cylinder. Destroyed the driver board in the process, but as it turns out, you don't need that.
Used an Playmates (edit) TOS phaser - nothing permanently changed in it, easily reversible. Only popped out the light bulb bracket, and hot glued the laser diode in its place.
I didn't feel the need to add a different activation switch, left the stock one. All I basically did is add a couple leads to the laser diode, connected them to ground & positive, and bam! Phaser with bright green visible beam that still has the sound effects!
Just in time for Halloween, to go with my Kirk costume. My brother is dressing as Spock.
Anyways, hard to film the beam with my point & shoot camera but you get the idea of how bright it is...
