TOS Enterprise Scratchbuild

Thanks draknoir2 and crackerjazz!

Update time!

Puttied and sanded down the ol' bird, primed her, and did it all over again:

I also added the "lip" to try and suggest the concave profile of the lower saucer...below is an ugly picture, but I didn't take a shot of it before further refinement:

Added the square-ish shapes that come out from the hull and hold the sensor array housing (you'll notice that I didn't add the slight recess into the secondary hull...my bad...I should have planned that part a little better at an earlier stage):

Bridge dome made from Apoxie Sculpt and a plastic egg-shaped container (for the dome top).

Bussards: Coated the inside of vending machine trinket domes with a mix of orange and red tamiya clear, then sprayed an alternating pattern of silver and copper...the contrast isn't as great as I had envisioned, but it's a nice effect:

So much more to come! This build is really, really much bigger than I ever imagined.

Chrisisall, Trekman, Metalalien - Thanks for the kind words, fellas.

Managed to get quite a bit finished up on this build late in the evening after my wife and son are asleep (and I should be too!). Man...I was up until two AM last night...this build is taking over!

Anyway, added much of the smaller components to the nacelles, impulse engines, and bridge and phaser/photon emitter. Here's an aft view of the rough work:

And what I hope to be the last primer coat:

Masked off some of the appropriate elements, so as not to waste all that grey coverage:

Lemme know what you think, and thanks for looking.

I can tell ya, I'd like to be there after you're finished with this & you tell someone you made it from scratch! The looks on various faces would be something to capture on digital.:lol

Fantastic work, glorbes. Nothing like a good scratchbuilt model to give a sense of accomplishment. The more labour of love you've put in the prouder you are of your work.

Randy13, Chrisisall, trekman1017, zredthunder, and crackerjazz - Thanks for the comments, fellas...I AM having a grand old time with this.

Enterprise Update!

Some work to be done still...I may be making some changes to how I did the windows, and I have some marking to mask and paint. I also have to add trekman's very generously shared decals, as well as some weathering...but here she is:

Sorry about the flash photography...the lighting in my basement is atrocious.

The lower part of the saucer section seems a bit 'pointy'- just a bit. Any chance you could take the dome off, sand it down/round it off just a tad (I mean like a mm) & replace the dome?
Other than that- GORGEOUS!(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

i'd leave it as is -- not 100% accurate, but there is a certain charm to this interpretation...in fact, I've seen illustrations of Enterprise that look very similar.

My humble 2 cents.

What is you plan for decals? Are you having them custom-printed? Decals? Laser-cut vinyl?

Hey Chris, thanks for the feedback. Actually, as I built this, I noticed another major issue with the phaser dome...the conical profile on the actual Enterprise model has a 'plateau' around the phaser emitter that I did not really suggest when I built up the armature. You're right of course about the height of the dome...but at this point, I'm probably going to live with the innaccuracies and wait until i build the next one :)

In any case, it's an amazing piece!!! Prolly heavy too.:lol

You should be proud. Now watch peeps laff at you when you try to tell 'em it's not from a kit!:cool
