TOS Enterprise Scratchbuild

i'd leave it as is -- not 100% accurate, but there is a certain charm to this interpretation...in fact, I've seen illustrations of Enterprise that look very similar.

My humble 2 cents.

What is you plan for decals? Are you having them custom-printed? Decals? Laser-cut vinyl?

Thanks for the comment! For decals, I'm printing off a custom colored set that trekman generously shared in his 33" E build thread...I picked up some clear decal sheet.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Every build should up your skill and challenge you. This model is the very essence of all of those things. Lord knows it isn't accurate...B and C deck section's too tall...the sensor array is made from a dollar store wine glass base, and is totally innaccurate, and the thickness of the primary hull is about 1/8 of an inch too thick. The shuttle bay section is definitely not accurate. But you know what? I am pretty proud of this ship...I'd have to say that having this model is like fulfilling one of those life-long ambitions (as stupid as that sounds). I would have lost my mind if I had this when I was ten or eleven...and like so many other things that I do, I'm motivated by what I imagined was possible when I was a kid. This thing is lumpy in places, and far from uniform and perfect...but I'm really glad that I have it.

Here she is!

You just summed up the whole reason to build a model to begin with. I applaud you for your effort and for showing everyone what time and dedication can achieve.

While it may not be accurate, it is something to be proud of and I would boldly display it in your home.

So what is your next project.......?? :)

My two cents --

While the finished model is definitely offscale in some obvious areas it's still more accurate and pleasing to my eyes than at least 95% of the drawings of the Enterprise in the comics I've read.

A bit distorted, yes, but it's a nice distortion of the ship.

Would make a good study model for an anime version of Star Trek or something else like that where absolute accuracy can be death to the artform.

When I saw the pics of the final painted version of the model, I thought to myself, "On second thought, this is pretty damn good!"

Character!!! You NAILED the CHARACTER of the ship!!!!
Be darn proud!
And more pix please! Like with a star field background if possible!!!(y)thumbsup

This really came out great, awesome job :thumbsup

The original model isn't exactly perfect either, that thing is full of wanks and wonks. The saucer is not perfectly circular, and the thickness varies. So you really got it more "accurate" than you think :lol

So what is your next project.......??

Hows about a Klingon Battlecruiser?

Character!!! You NAILED the CHARACTER of the ship!!!!

Agreed, something JJ's *ahem* "updated" movie version failed to do.

Wow! What a hoot! I gotta say I was a little skeptical at first until I saw the final pics. Man this really turned out great! Creativity at it's finest.

Thanks for the kind words, fellas.

My next project will probably be a Hasbro-styled Star Destroyer, but in terms of Star Trek, I'm thinking I may tackle an enemy ship...either a Romulan BoP or a Klingon D-7. If I decide to do something smaller, I may do a Galileo shuttlecraft. I also have some ideas for doing a 'prototype' Enterprise.

I'm glad to hear that the 'character' of the ship is intact...I'm actually pretty surprised/relieved that this thing turned out okay, because it was a lot of work. The next one I make (probably in a few years) will be lighted for sure...I may even try to score a Polar Lights/Round Two kit.

And Chrisisall...it's a bit crude, but here ya go:

I'd like to know what kind (brand) of putty you used. I'm having trouble finding a good one.

Spot and glazing putty...there are a few brands out there (3M, Rust Check).

Thanks for the kind words, and for accepting this beastie for what it is :)

Thanks for your input. I'd love to know what you think (so far) of my build; It's a 1:350 scale, based around the Polar Lights kit, but the majority is scratchbuild, rather than kitbash.

What a lot of hard work this must have been. I wouldn't have thought it possible with styrene alone. This took a lot of thinking and planning.

Well done. Sorry I missed this but it came up in a search and I took a look.

So what's next from you?

Steve
