Tomb Raider Reborn

Ladynerd - I just stumbled onto your thread in the last couple of days. I think your attention to detail is pretty amazing.

As to the pants, I think the cut/design is probably more important than the exact color. If you're planning on wearing the costume to a con, then a slight difference in color isn't something an average person would notice. A difference in the style and fit would be more likely to stand out.

The pants you're wearing in the photos above look great on you, and seem very close to the style and fit of the ones in the game images you've posted.

The thing to remember is that no one but you is going to notice the really small details. If a pocket is a little different or the color is a little off, no one else will notice. It may well bug the crap out of you that it's not "perfect", but you'll probably be the only one. The only way to be absolutely SA would be to make them yourself - and it sounds like that's not something you're interested in (or have equipment/knowledge for).

Great work so far, and keep posting!

not saying that you should go put holes in your ears, but if something like the color of the paints needing to be perfect i imagine that you will want the ear rings to complete the "perfectness" of your work here. the clip on rings are a pain (no explanation as to how i know this...) but for a short time, or even just your final pictures they would be worth it for the detail and authenticity of your work. just saying.

My game and book just arrived so i thought I'd post a pic of the necklace.

It's heavy and feels metallic but isn't effected by a magnet.
The cord is to short to go around the neck twice.

Anyway, I'm off to start the game.

Robinhood jw - Thanks for the compliment, it's much appreciated. The truth is I have too much time on my hands to research these things (and I thoroughly enjoying researching them). Though I am in no way, stressing myself to be exactly screen accurate. Case in point, I could've actually gotten the SA Timberland boots (in my size and the right colour), but I chose not to as I liked the Timberland Dusseldorfs better (as they flatter my legs more and to me, are a nice nod to classic Lara's boots). Hm....I'm actually opting to go the opposite route as it's been harder to find the cut/design of the pants rather than the colour. Or rather, it's been nigh impossible to find cargo pants in my size (as I range between a 00-3 depending with a bum and short legs. Designers hate me, I swear).

As far as the colour of pants go, I can't quite pin it down as it changes depending on the lighting.

Metal Wood - Ah, why not? Besides, I like having the illusion of earrings because it freaks everyone out that I suddenly went out and pierced my ears. :p

Thanks for the closeup Division 6! Hope you enjoy the game!

I've actually got progress updates, you guys! So here we go...

I've got three options of pants. Which one do you guys think would work? I'm leaning towards the first one myself. (Now keep in mind that Lara's pants are darker due to being soiled with mud and dirty from injuries. Mine have not been dyed or distressed in any ways yet.)

I've been learning how to build arrows (though ornamental and not to actually fire, due to convention restrictions). I got 3/8" dowel rods and whittled them away with a knife to get a more hand-carved look. Right now I'm onto the fletching stage.

I had found some fake body piercings at the local costume store, but they were very thick and chunky looking when I put them on. So I scrapped those and got some nose rings from Spencers (20 gauge, still the right diameter, but much thinner like actual earrings) that I'm using for the earrings instead. Looks great!

Got a makeshift necklace thrown together late last night (until I can get a proper pendant carved). I'll have pictures of it later.

I also picked up a cheap pair of red earbuds from Walmart as I'll be running around Momocon in Atlanta today as Lara Croft 1.0 (pre-shipwreck, when she's still on the Endurance listening to her music). So hopefully I'll have some pictures soon. :)

I like the first pants the best. The color and fit seem to match the best, and they look better on you as well.

Nice job on the arrows! Are those grey goose fletchings? The sinew looks sweet. If you want an easy stain on the dowels, just use a furniture polish like old English and rub it on with a cloth. An old toothbrush works great if you have already tied on the fetching.

You'll all be happy to know I went with Option #1. Those are now my pants for the costume. I'm debating dying them or not before going through with a full distressing. But getting a bunch of dirt and mud on them maybe ease them into the right colour.

Rue - Honestly, I'm not sure. They were in a large pack of feathers I purchased for $2 at Hobby Lobby (though I tried to pick the most realistic looking. Alas, they didn't have anything that looked like turkey feathers). I will most definitely be staining the dowels and doing more fletching this week. I had to take some serious sandpaper to the shafts as I cut a little too deep in some places and don't want to get splinters.

Here's a sneak peek at my Lara Croft 1.0 (pre-shipwreck, pre-dirty) that I wore to Momocon in Atlanta yesterday. (The necklace is a temporary one that I added until I can get a proper pendant made. And yes, I know she doesn't wear the necklace before the Endurance wrecks, but the necklace is very iconic and since I didn't have any props with me or bloodied clothes, I figured it'd make my costume more recognisable at a convention.)

Aggggggg! Something is bothering me, it happens with every archery movie/promotion. After some animator or director has gone through all the trouble with training for archery, the promotional guys reverse the shot because they want the character to be facing another direction. This changes which hand the character is shooting.
So, I don't really play the game, but I assume that Laura is in the majority of the planet, and is supposed to shoot right handed. Check out these pics from an earlier post in this thread

She has suddenly become left handed. Grrrr.

Ladynerd - I think you were right about the pants. The ones you picked have the same 'bunched' look just under the knee that Lara's have in the game images you posted.

Very impressive work on the arrows. I'm an archer and historical re-enactor (SCA), and I've made arrows very similar to what you've got. Since mine have to actually fly, I have thinner thread to hold them on so it's lighter weight, but yours make sense for part of a costume to show off the detail of how you made the arrows. Did you also cut in knocks? I can't see from the photo. I'm curious what the conventions restrictions are on arrows that can't be shot? Can they not have a metal point - or is there something more?

(Parenthetical note if you're curious - For safety reasons, arrows made from dowel rods really should be only for decoration/costume. Real arrows are carefully made so the grain runs straight along the shaft. Dowel rods have grain that runs in all directions, and there's a good chance it would break apart when it hit the target, if you were to actually shoot it.)

Rue - I know what you mean about movies and games not getting the archery quite right. It's a big pet peeve of mine to otherwise enjoy a movie, but have to grit my teeth through the archery inaccuracies. There's a few places in LOTR where Legolas's quiver switches shoulders, but was otherwise pretty good, if exaggerated. I haven't seen Hunger Games. A recent movie that really got the archery right was Brave. The slow-motion scene of her releasing the arrow was my favorite part in the entire film.

Thanks Drac and Rue! :)

I totally agree with the facepalm moments artists/directors sometimes do when it comes to switching weapon arms. I hope someone on my team for my photoshoot in a couple weeks knows archery so I can be posed correctly. If not, I'll watch some tutorials beforehand so I don't look like a completely ignorant gal with a bow.

Robinhood jw - I have not cut in the knocks yet, but will soon. Time ran out with my prop session with my friend. I hope to revisit that this week. I'm still getting more information on what sort of props can be used at conventions. But I do know that I'm going to do the arrow tips out of craft foam and paint them with a more metallic structure to mimic the look of metal. But if any ancy security guard feels it, they'll see it's nothing but foam.

(And I did actually know that about dowel rods not being used for real arrows. :) I have a friend that is a very good archer, so I've been getting a lot of information from him. My expertise lies in the swords department, so I rely on other practitioners to help me out when it comes to archery.)
