I'm wanting to make a relativly inexpenise No Face from "studio ghibli - spirited away" please look left:) but want to get two different expressions into the face.

I was thinking memory foam as a starting point & wondered if any one had any experience with this medium & it's use in this type of application?

& Can the foam be sculpted?.

or any other suggestions, tips or recommendations warmly welcomed:thumbsup

Ok over a 100 views & no advise:unsure

So, is there a cheaper alternative to memory foam?
since I've been checking today it's a bit too pricey for what I want to use it for although I think it would be perfect for the job.

plus reading this & helping out might take your mind off TK helmets for two min's:rolleyes

I'm looking into the possibility of making one of these myself, I've always liked them.. but mine would just be a static expression.

I'm not quite sure what you're thinking - do you want it to change from smiling to frowning, et al.?

I can't put a finger on what you're describing. You're thinking of using memory foam to carve the blank face and then you want the face to change into two different expressions via some type of device installed behind the memory foam?

That's hit the nail right bang on the head, I wondered if I installed an oval L-shaped base frame that the foam sit's in, then using a couple of linked hinged mechanism's with locating pin's into the back of the carved foam?

So that when the spring return hinge- lever was pulled it would give me a smile from the frown like rollerboi mentioned & then return to the frown when the lever was reset. "leaving the Memory foam doing it's job" back to the frown

So Would this thing work? or would I just be wasting money finding out it can't :confused

I have no suggestions, but I wanted to say I love Spirited Away and I wish you the best of luck on this. :)

Many thanks for the support Serenity :thumbsup I'm going to give it a try as I found some smaller pieces of Mem foam that's cut the cost down a lot & if it works out well :confused I'll post an update ltr of the "animatronic no face":)

if It's fails I'll let the thread slide into therpf oblivion:unsure

Why not making a sort of "animatronic" mask?
Rubber surface, hard shell beneath, and a mechanism that will move the "mouth" from a frown to a smile... It could be an option:)

Thanks Ramiel, now thats exactly why I posted here, for more inspitational ideas:) do you think the rubber would need to be molded from a sculpt & cast? I'm not sure my skills are up to that yet:confused

Although I'm might try mock up a couple of styles but go with the cheapest "easiest" option first. although I appreciate that you usually only get what you payfor

A rubberized foam mask, dyed white or originally white, could easily work for this. You could shape it by cutting it into the rounded trapezoid (or oval, depending on the shape) and forming it with heat on a form, if I am not mistaken. Best of luck!
