Tips on painting Iron Man helmet for noob. Please help

Hello I have been researching and looking through other methods of making suits and helmets. But what I rarely see is tips about painting a helmet or part. Maybe I am searching the wrong keywords? :facepalm My supply store would either be pepboys or autozone

This is the primer I have so far (Rustoleum primer), is this the correct primer if I were to use the Dupli-color barcelona red? like on STEALTH's tutorial? Or do I have to buy a new primer with the dupli-color brand? And what's primer "filler"?

Anyways, any HELP would be appreciated.

I was watching STEALTH's tutorial and blackdynamo uses

but he also mentions he uses the

and for the gold paint, delray uses a "Rustoleum" Brass

When your painting the helmet, I get that you have to spray light coats. and maybe 3-4 coats all together. But I thought your suppose to use the same brand of paint?

What gold paint brand should I use?

Last but not least, when I see people paint their helmets, I noticed they paint the lip part red (but it's the gold part) but it gets painted over gold. Are you suppose to paint over it red with 1-2 coats, then put 2 coats of gold?

And when your done, how many coats of automotive enamel gloss should I spray?

Sorry it's so long :(

Not sure if it matters (not that I know the answers to your questions) but are you applying the paint to foam or plastic or bondo surface etc?

Count me interested though ;)

I have a few threads I've saved for iron man paint colors....
Here is the latest that I grabbed from one of Surreal Studios threads over in the JunkYard for his amazing buckets:

Duplicolor inferno red
Duplicolor sunburst gold
Both rattle cans.
Tamiya flat black acrylic(airbrushed)
Seams were diluted black wash.

I think it's resin (maybe someone else can clarify?), and the person who is selling it to me stripped the helmet raw.

Thread can be found here http://www.therpf.com/f13/iron-man-mark-3-helmet-180688/ I should be getting it by wednesday

So I'm gonna try my best to fix the thin areas with bondo and smooth things out.

Paint color depends on which mark you are doing. Mark 3 for instance will be a darker shade of red than the others. Filler primer is just a heavier primer that will fill small pinholes

My process:
- prepare the surface (sand, putty, prime, wet sand, repeat)
- prime
- 3-4 light coats of base color, allowing 10 minutes between coats
- allow basecoat to dry 24 hours before masking off other areas to be painted
- paint chin detail, remove masking carefully before paint is dry
- allow all paint to cure before applying 2-3 coats of clear

Im also curious what method is used to black wash the seems. Im sure I could figure it out but if theres any specific ways please do tell :) heres my helmet so far, and the seems do seem to be the hardest place to keep clean.

That bucket looks great. Maybe you can spray some test piece then practice the backwash. Is it just watered down black paint that is brushed on? I gotta do some searching now.

What do you mean by "Seams were diluted black wash"

A "wash" is a way of weathering painted objects. Take some diluted black paint on a piece of cloth, wipe it onto a small area of the seam, then use a clean cloth to wipe it off right away before it dries. It will leave a black deposit in all the low areas of the mask (such as inside the seam), making it look weathered and more realistic.

The opposite of this is called "dry brushing", where you take a small amount of paint (usually silver) in a brush, rub it onto paper until there's just barely any paint there, and then very lightly draw your brush over the high parts of the object, leaving behind a thin silver sheen that simulates polished wear and rubbing.

I don't think you should use that primer. It is a primer to be used before your base coat, but shouldn't be used on your project. You want a sand-able, filler primer. Grey or red, which ever you prefer. The reason for the sand-able, filler primer is so you can 1) fill any sand scratches and 2) sand the primer to a nice smooth finish before the base coat (colour) and then clear coat it.

You are right to apply the primer and paint in light coats. Complete coverage is not necessary on the first coat. Build up the coats evenly with multiple coats.

The same brand isn't necessary, but some can react with others depending what you spray. Be careful not to use plastic paint with the others. They don't like each other, and frankly the plastic paint just doesn't turn out as nice.

As for the clear coat, apply in the same manner. Multiple light coats. Just be extra careful with the clear as it can run easier without you noticing.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for that info Surreal... your buckets always look top notch.

Do you sand/wet sand between coats?

Looking into painting my first bucket... not Iron Man though.

This is the paintjob i did on my helmet.

The red i use for the top layer is manufactured by Motip. The color number is 51493. I google it and it should be ALFA ROMEO RED 132 or ACURA R-505P.
I also used a darker cherry-ish red as a base for the edges. The bright red is for highlihjting.
The Gold is from a manufacture for Interior design Paint. So its not really for outdoor use. The advantage however is that it will create an natural worn look when the suit is worn more often. After i sprayed it, i gently sanded it with a scotchblock.
After i filled the edges with black acryl paint using a brush to get more dept.

Good luck.

good evening,
