Time's Top 20 Worst Blockbusters Of All Time

Sorry, but I think that list is garbage. There are a few on there that I for sure don't think belong. Now, say what you will, but TF:DOTM shouldn't be on there, especially considering the numbers it is putting out.

I also notice that Dragonball and D & D aren't on there. D&D was on this weekend, and I had to watch to try to recall how horrible. Yep...

20. The Last Airbender : Didn't want to see, but M Night shamalamading dong is all...
19. Knight and Day : Didn't want to see but will agree
18. Hudson Hawk : Didn't see
17. Avengers : Um...sure
16 Transformers: Dark of the Moon : Strongly disagree, it is a great movie
15. Stealth : I like jet movies so...
14. The Haunting : Yeah
13. Howard the Duck : Horrible, maybe, but it was entertaining
12. Speed 2: Cruise Control : Sure
11. Green Lantern : It wasn't horrible, but it definately didn't feel to par with Marvel
10. Pearl Harbor : Disagree, it is decent
09. Catwoman : Agree...
08. Wild Wild West : Um...I found it entertaining, but can't say it doesn't belong
07. Waterworld : Disagree, I thought it was decent
06. Godzilla : On the fence, it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't spectacular.
05. Batman and Robin : Agree
04. Battlefield Earth : Agree
03. Sex and the City 2 : No desire to see
02. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace : Agree
01. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: Disagree, one of the few who actually like it.

OK I'm a little confused.

Are we talking about "blockbusters" as in movies that made substantial $ at the box office, but were actual crap?

If so why is Howard the Duck on the list? Sure it was crap but it didn't make any money either.

Hudson Hawk? I enjoyed it personally, but at $17 Million, not a blockbuster either.

And where's Armageddon? Made bucket loads of money. Still a steaming pile of p00.

And what?? No " Fred : The Movie??

I'm a big WWE fan and knowing Cena was in it, thought hey, why not watch Fred : The Movie.. I struggled to get through 25 minutes of it.. I couldn't watch another minute of it.. Only got through 25 minutes as I was playing Black Ops while watching..

Armageddon, yeah. Or Deep Impact, or 2012, or Day After Tomorrow or AI or Independence Day...

I think their definition of blockbuster is a bit screwy.

I would remove Howard the Duck, Waterworld, Stealth, Hudson Hawk, and Battlefield Earth simply because they didn't make huge amounts of money to begin with. I'm not sure about the box office on some of the others.

I would add Armageddon, Bad Boys II, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.

I think their definition of blockbuster is a bit screwy.

Yeah I think their criteria for why a movie is on the list is a little all over the place- there is no clear definition.

I've sifted through the "follow this link" link on the Top 20 page and came up with this:

Either it was a movie that was supposed to make a lot of money but bombed (grossed less than its production budget such as Last Air Bender).

Had a "Big Moviestar" in it but failed to meet box-office expectations (Bruce Willis- "Hudson Hawk" only made 17 mil.)

Or (and this is where it gets very subjective) was a movie that "made a lot of money" yet critics still think "sucked" (Transformers 2 & 3, TPM).

And yeah- Spiderman 3 definitely should be on there! :thumbsdown :lol

Most of those movies were not considered blockbusters. They were box office flops.

Domestic Gross at the box office and budget:

20. The Last Airbender- $131,772,187 budget- $150,000,000
19. Knight and Day- $76,423,035 budget- 117,000,000
18. Hudson Hawk- $17,218,080 budget- 65,000,000
17. Avengers- $23,384,939 budget- 60,000,000
16 Transformers: Dark of the Moon- $338,007,725 buget- 195,000,000 (an actual blockbuster)
15. Stealth- $32,116,746 budget- 135,000
14. The Haunting- $91,411,151 budget- 80,000,000 (not a flop, but I don't think it can be considered a blockbuster either)
13. Howard the Duck- $16,295,774 budget- 37,000,000
12. Speed 2: Cruise Control- $48,608,066 budget- 160,000,000
11. Green Lantern- $114,327,614 budget- 200,000,000 (maybe a luke warm blockbuster, but still under budget domestically)
10. Pearl Harbor- $198,542,554 budget- 140,000,000 (it did well enough)
09. Catwoman- $40,202,379 budget- 100,000,000
08. Wild Wild West- $113,804,681 budget- 170,000,000 (giant freaking spiders are expensive)
07. Waterworld- $88,246,220 budget- 175,000,000
06. Godzilla- $136,314,294 budget- 130,000,000 (not bad for '98)
05. Batman and Robin- $107,325,195 budget- 125,000,000
04. Battlefield Earth- $21,471,685 budget- 73,000,000
03. Sex and the City 2- $95,347,692 budget- 100,000,000 (IT COST THEM 100 MILLION DOLLARS TO MAKE THAT???)
02. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace- $431,088,301 budget- 115,000,000 (a bonafide blockbuster)
01. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen- $402,111,870 budget- 200,000,000 (another actual blockbuster)

My definition of a blockbuster is a movie that is VERY costly to make and is subject to very high expectations before its release.

Then would movies such as Jaws or Star Wars fit the description of "blockbuster?" They were not exactly costly to make... especially when you consider that they made 50 times their budgets.

How about:

blockbuster =
1) a film that does big BO, or
2) a film that was *intended and expected* to do big BO

?

This list is all wrong...

Pearl Harbor is not number one!?

But then again, I enjoy Wild Wild West (and Van Helsing, for that matter) - so what do I know?

Yeah, and I wonder if it's also to do with the fact that he's basically spending his own money, so he keeps a much closer watch on waste.

I have a bit of trouble believing TPM was made for 115 mil.

So either Speed 2's budget went overboard (no pun intended :lol) or TPM's budget has been underreported.

Where the hell is "Armageddon" and "Independece Day"? Both were HUGE moneymakers and both suck SOOOOOOOOOOO much it's almost too much to take.

The worst Blockbuster of all time has to be the one off of Glade and Main.

They never have a good selections and the late fees they charge just suck.

;) ;) ;)

Oh man! I watched ID4 last week for the first time in years. I was on a "alien invasion" kick all week (War of the Worlds 1953, Mars Attacks, Battle: L.A. ... and ID4).

I never realized just how unwatchable that film truly is until the other week. :sick

Cliche is too good. Totally insulting is what I would call it now. And I was going "oooh and ahhhh" back in 1996 when I first saw it.

Yeah... some films should never be revisited. :lol

By "Blockbuster" they mean the pitch for these hunks of crap somehow smashed though some Bonehead's skull at a Studio that happened to be holding a checkbook.

"I want a Mad Max on the water, and I want the script on Monday."
"Here you go Mr. Corman."
"Are you crazy? This'll cost $5 million bucks to make! Get out of here!"
Voila! Waterworld. True Story.

Laffo.
