Good Earlier Films - Seldom Seen or Heard of - Must See

Battleground and Sahara; two of my favorite WWII flix. Battleground is a bit more of a traditional war film, while Sahara is more of a drama set in the war. Two solid films though. Give 'em a shot.

Dark Star (1974). Not sure about good, but definitely interesting. There are some scenes with a beach ball and an elevator that are the basis for Aliens.

Another great adventure film is The Man Who Would Be King directed by John Huston. Connery and Caine at their finest. Great story, fab film. A must see.

A second great forgotten Connery flik is Robin & Marian. Connery as Robin Hood, Nicol Williamson as Little John, Denholm Elliot as Will Scarlett, Richard Harris as Richard the Lionheart, Audrey Hepburn as Maid Marian, Ian Holm as King John, and Robert Shaw as the Sheriff of Nottingham. I mean, come on!

Also, William Friedkin's Sorcerer. Roy Scheider is aces. Man, there's a scene with a truck on a crumbling rope bridge that will have your heart in your mouth!

All these are from the 70s, so not that early (at least to me), but I'll bet a lot of you haven't seen them.

Guys...could you please add the release date? There were at least 4 films with the name Sahara but I'm assuming your talking about the earliest one with Humphrey Bogart (1943).

More movies have been added.....can't decide?............if you want a recommendation on a particular type of film.....ask here or send me a PM.

A few suggestions for the list:

Harvey (1950)
Bell, Book, & Candle (1958)
(Both Jimmy Stewart movies)

I Married a Witch (1942)
The Lion in Winter (1968)
Young Bess (1953)
The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939)
Operation Petticoat (1959)
The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964)
The Raven (1963)
The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
Romeo and Juliet (1968)

1939 was a banner year for movies:
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Women
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Wuthering Heights

Watching Gloria Sanson chewing the scenery is a must:
Sunset Blvd. (1950)

A bit past your timeline but worth a watch:
The Villain (1979)
Ladyhawke (1985)
The Name of the Rose (1986)

I've more, but these popped into my head right off...

Sloe,

A good list...thanks. BTW I'm assuming thats a typo and you meant "Gloria Swanson" not Sanson. Keep em coming guys.

I've seen quite a few over the years and you picked out the best in what was a flood of bad ones, especially the 50s scifi. i'd add Lawrence of Arabia, This Island earth, Forbidden Planet, the first Planet of the apes. Colossus the Forbin project too. So many good ones out there. 5 million years to earth i think is one of the best of that era as is Them!

Wes...most of the films you listed are usually well known in this community which is why I tried to keep my list, what I felt were "seldom known films" ....regardless the ones you mentioned are of course worth watching. Anyone else checked out these films? You guys might keep a watch on Turner Classic Movie Channel. Quite a few of the films on my list were shown in the last couple months......last night they ran "What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?" ....." Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" will be shown soon.

Yeah i have been looking up TCM online as our basic cable no longer offers a tv guide channel. Also there should be a lot of horror movies this month, i think last year every thursday was a monster movie night. I have an entire book of old scifi films that are little known, some for good reason, that i keep wanting to see.
Panic in Year zero is a good one i need to find again; the world, the flesh, and the devil is a good one too, This is not a test isn't the best but it's an interesting one. Not sure if Things To Come is all that well known either. panic in year zero is a rather stand out one for the time as it was pretty blunt about the daughter having been attacked by a gang of thugs. The Tingler with vincent price is a fun one too.

"The Tingler" ...now theres a movie I should add to the list....thanks. One other movie I just added to the list is " On Borrowed Time"..it was on TCM last night. hadn't seen that one in years. Stars Lionel Barrymore who traps death and won't release him all the while no one is dying.....good movie.

It'd be nice to get The Tingler back in the theater with the vibrating seats and other silly things they did, see how kids these days would react.

The Kid (1921)
A Woman of Paris (1923)
The Gold Rush (1925)
Metropolis (1927)
City Lights (1931)
Modern Times (1936)
The Great Dictator (1940)
Dance Girl Dance (1940)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Double Indemnity (1944)
The Big Sleep (1946)
Monsieur Verdoux (1947)
The Third Man (1949)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Limelight (1952)
Touch of Evil (1958)

I just happened to wake up and turn on the TV to The Turner Classic Movie Channel to catch the middle of "Born Losers". The 1st film in the Billy Jack series. I checked out whats playing later tonight and saw that the "Wild One" is showing at 1:00am Pacific Time and "Sitting Pretty" will be on at 12pm Pacific Time Saturday. and To anyone who can catch or record these movies, they are worth a look see. I also noticed "Jungle Jim in the Forbidden Land" will be on at 9am later this morning.......it stars Johnny Weissmuller...this was one of his attempts to shake his Tarzan stereotype although going back in the jungle didn't seem like he left his past character too far behind. ....check them out if you can

Spies Like Us (1985)

From the folks I've talked to, hardly anyone has seen this movie. Not only is this some good "Cold War Era" poking fun, but Chase and Aykroid are hilarious! Family Guy did a rather poor send-up of this, but it remains one of my favorite comedies.

Who's Harry Crumb? (1989)

I must hang around an un-hip crowd - This is my favorite John Candy movie (an actor who I liked in anything he's in... even if the movie itself was lousy). I absolutely love this movie and almost nobody I know has seen or heard of it.

Some good upcoming films on TCM you should try catching...all showtimes are Pacific Time....check your local listings:

You Can't Take It With You - Oct 17th 5:15am
Elmer Gantry - Oct 19th 11:45 pm
A face in the Crowd - Oct 19th 5:00pm
Diary of Madman - Oct 10th 10:45pm
Birdman of Alkatraz - Oct 10th 12:30pm

Just noticed that "Birdman of Alcatraz' will air this morning at 12:30 pacific time on TCM in case anyone was interested. Then after that the 1952 version of "Prisoner of Zenda" will air at 3:15. "Onion Head" with Andy Griffith will air Sunday at 1:00pm and right after that "The Man from Laramie" at 3:00pm. At 5:00pm that same day the animated Max Fletcher 1939 version of "Gullivers Travels will be on. Right after then you should catch "Mr Bug Goes to Town" at 6:30pm ...another 1941 Max Fletcher animated masterpiece although the title is "Hoppity Goes to Town" on my laserdiscs.
