TIE Helmet Hose?

Gone but not forgotten.
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had a source for TIE helmet hose? I've found some "passable" hose in black plastic, but I really want the good heavy rubber stuff. Also, what diameter will I need?

Thanks.

Hi Sgt,

The stuff I use is the same stuff that race car drivers use to pipe cool air into their helmets. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but for trooping it's awesome as it's super flexible rubber with a wire coil inserted. When I was looking for the stuff, I found out that, when talking hose, they don't go by the outer diameter, but inner, mine's 30mm inner, 37mm outer.

I know the hose is longer than what is considered accurate, but I made it longer so I could turn my head easier, although I've trimmed it a bit more since that pic was taken.

So that being said, if you're happy with the look of it, contact a shop that deals in motor racing apparel. I've heard of people using vac hose and the hose that comes out the back of washing machines too, but they're not as flexible.

I hope this helped in some way.

Cheers,

Kraig

I've not seen any hose that is the exact type used. If someone thinks they have found it, PLEASE post it here. I have super good hi res ref pics of the actual film used hose that I could send to someone (so they could host the photos) so that we could start a board wide search.

You could try emailing Andrew Ainsworth at SDS props.

Somebody asked a question a while back on the forum about the correct colour for the rebel fleet trooper helmets and I suggested mailing SDS the person got the information they wanted.

You can only try :)

Cheers Chris.

I wouldn't be adverse to that, but this would be for a competing prop- Do you think he'd be a good sport about it, or tell me to go get stuffed? :lol

I saw a really nice black rubber hose at Home depot when looking for something else.

It was back by the water heaters and gas fittings, but I just can't remember what it's intended use was. It was definitely not the washer drain hose though, this had much bigger "ribs" and was rubber...

I know at one point SDS had big ideas to make loads of products and may well do in the future but since the LFL lawsuit no new products have materialised. There was plans to make a rebel fleet trooper, X-Wing etc and SDS still told a board member here the exact colour of the rebel fleet trooper.

SDS only make the TIE helmet to my knowledge and it doesn't include hoses. They did talk about TIE armour at one point but it never came to be.

I tell you what I will mail SDS and ask as I do own an SDS TIE helmet and it could do with hoses so it might help us both out.

If I get an answer I will post it up :)

If I don't then nothing lost.

Stay tuned.

Cheers Chris.

I use a set of repro scuba double-hose regulater hoses. Nice thick flexible rubber. I got them on eBay for $40.

I actually have some white tubing that exactly the same - I can remember seeing it on a hairdryer in the UK in the 70's.
It's reinforced with fabric and metal as far as I know.
I'll see if I can find it and take some photos...

Chris - when the SDS TIE's first came out they were going to be shipped WITH hoses, but tbh looked a little odd with hoses going nowhere :lol He was going to do the chest boxes/tubes together but this still hasnt happened, although at Memorabilia earlier this month the guys on their stand were saying "very soon".

However some or the reproduction TIE's did go with hoses, I've got a set. As far as how accurate they are its hard to say. I'm pretty sure AA said the originals were not found items but that he heat applied some black plastic material over a wire frame (the 2004 versions were certainly this) but whether this is the case or not on the originals I really dont know. They do look quite similar though having seen some pretty good reference pics.

Note that legal-wise, according to the thread on the RPB "the court gave LFL until the 21st August to act upon the (default) ruling or the case would be closed..." . I dont know if this happened or not.

Cheers

Jez

oh and one more thing. The "point" about the hoses is that unlike a normal hose, they dont spring-back into their normal shape (i.e. straight). The replica ones SDS did could be bent into the form you wanted and I presume this matched the originals. Note the caveat.

Cheers

Here's the hose I have.

I really thought it was this type but looking at it now I think it's this stuff.

I'd imagine it was quite commonly available in a variety of colours during the 70's.

That one looks EXACTLY like the stuff I use, but it's black. I wonder if my hose is a continuation of that from the 70's.....hmmmm.

Slightly off topic, I'm gonna use hoses from old ge hairdryers for my AT-AT driver. Just be aware that they come in a million different diameters and styles. The distance between the ribs veries a lot. Some of the older hose appears to 'break down' at some point and become a sticky mess. All this being said, I still think they are still too stiff. The pictures of the at-at drivers I've seen show that hose drooping all over the place.

Like I said, I have superb reference of film used hoses if someone here can host the photo(s).
It would be great if all of us working together could nail this down.

If someone would be kind enough to post some reference shots of the hoses here.........I, being a dentist can research my dental suppliers for the rubber inhalation sedation hoses. My current hoses are just corrugated plastic, but I remember many older units and other brands that use the rubber variety. They were black rubber. I was told once that the original hoses were from O2 delivery systems and it all does seem quite familiar. I'd be happy to do the research on my end.

Dave :)

Given that the original helmets and x-wing helms were from APH-6 flight helmets the hosing may have been from those. Havent had much luck sourcing them in the uk but did have some luck in a DIY superstore with perfect hoses (although scaled as my helmet is a rubies and therefore smaller than screen accurate).

you could try these places

Yep, while I was looking for Vader ROTJ Reveal ribbed hoses (I tried ALL the big UK companies.) I did notice stuff that looked perfect for the Tie. I think it was the Vacuflex. Lightweight PVC over a metal helix.

Here is a UK site that makes hoses of all types and it shows the construction of their hoses this may help. It has loads of sizes and colours also.

Also can somebody take up Gino's offer of hosting his images of a screen used hose please.

Chris.
