Thundercats Sword of Omens build (6/10 - first pull - w. images pg.9)

Re: Sword of Omens build

Might I suggest tapering the thick base instead? A little will go along way. I'd just hate to see you change the guard as it's got a wonderful shape to it.

Thanks OM! Its not too bad to remake, but between redoing one of the other, I'm doing redo the thing for accuracy :)

I'll be thinning out the general thickness of the base there too, but by just a little though.

As for photos, i don't have any new ones at this time, other than a couple coats of primer and one segment of the handle mostly sculpted. Since there's 7 segments that are identical, i'm sculpting one and casting the segments :)

Re: Sword of Omens build (update pg. 2)

This is a great build! Any chance you would share the drawings/templates you made? Would love to try one myself someday.

Re: Sword of Omens build (update pg. 2)

Great build. I've always loved the Sword of Omens. I look forward to seeing it completed.

Re: Sword of Omens build (update pg. 2)

Very cool.:thumbsup
I used to love that cartoon.
...hope a live action film is in the works.
Can't wait to see this done.

I second that. I completely understand if you decide not to share, but I would love to have a copy of the full size drawing you have laying under the sword. Looks like it is separated onto five sheets of paper.

I have these I will share

Somewhere I have these with a grid. I'll see if I can find them

They are not 100% accurate but they are a good reference for certain parts. Thanks. :)

Re: Sword of Omens build (update pg. 2)

I'd say 99% accurate. The only part I'd say is off would be the blue gems on the hilt and they change depending on the artist.

Back on topic of Fev's replica. Any updates?

Re: Sword of Omens build (update pg. 2)

The blade shape and length are off. The sword of omens has a tapered blade, not a straight one and is longer than in the pic you originally provided. Most of it looks quite good however.

Wow! This is pretty special, I'm temped to have a bash at the little one and the glove after seeing this awesome build. Good luck finishing it, i can't wait to see how it turns out.

Re: Sword of Omens build (update pg. 2)

Sorry for taking so long to post again.. I usually would like to have some new photos to go along with a post, and had to break from it for a little to take care of some other work.

When it comes to the blueprints, I'd prefer to hold on them for now. They took a long time to figure out, and I'm not finished with the project

Here's some wip photos though

Sculpted one segment to save some of the work, and cast a bunch of them. you can see a bunch of them amongst the pile built up during "casting day" XD

I assembled 7 of them, and they'll need a bit o' cleanup, but here those are. I found some silver teardrops at Michaels, and the reds are a placeholder for the blues that I'll be using. I might go with a clear though. Haven't decided quite yet.

regardless, I'll be gluing the miscolored gems onto a board and making molds of them. The metal bits I like though, and will be using them, since they it perfectly into the teardrop recesses that were carved :)

I did some eye tests with resins. The first two are using some casting epoxy i got from Michaels without, then with a piece of silver mylar underneath. The bottom two are with smoothcast 325, which turned out pretty durn bubbly, again without, and with mylar. I also had tossed some glossy spray on them to see how it looks with a less glazed feel.

I like the one on the top right, (glazed with silver mylar). The next step on that is to put the pressure pot thats sitting in the garage to use, to get rid of those damned bubbles

Re: Sword of Omens build (updates pg. 3)

This is moving along pretty quick now..The grip is now connected to the hilt, and the hooks are tacked on for now. Those will be replaced, but the taper that I was concerned about actually doesn't look bad at all :)

This project suddenly became 10 times more fun, now that the handle is attached! (there's s big nerd grin hidden behind my hands)

Next up is the pommel!
