Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

how does the silver plating look like when fully finished ?

It looked great when it was shiny and new. Within a couple of days it tarnished pretty badly. I clearcoated one of the faceplates and it yellowed significantly in a hurry. The ones that weren't clearcoated lost most of the silvering as soon as they were handled at all. In short, it's not a product I'd recommend.

Yesterday I dusted off the Mk39 and did a bit of smoothing:

Then I did a quick test-fitting to see how bad the visiblity would be:

Surprisingly, I can see at least as well as I can out of the Mk3 helmet.

I also went ahead and cut out the backdoor:

The remaining part will be cast separately in order to make it easier to get in and out of the helmet.

Stay tuned...

I think I've already said this but coming back to drool over this thing and motivate myself I have to restate...********. This is just a great suit and I wait with anticipation for your builds! I love your total body coverage with the suit with the arm and knee sleeves (in fact out of curiosity do you do commission for such things?) and I'm always trying to think of the best ways to get flexibility and coverage and thinking of experimenting with rubber material or even a textured/metal looking fabric. Maybe instead of the iron moon plates you could use similar undersuit coverage as the other joints giving you some more flexibility and perhaps one step closer to the holy grail...sitting down! But in all seriousness love the build and you inspire!

Those pics are really showing off your fantastic build...I'm following with great interest your ED-209 thread also:cool

Re: Test Drive at the Local Hobby Expo

Awesome helmets! Well done, sir.

Today I finally took the suit out and showed it off at an event. I talked a slightly taller, thinner friend into wearing it at the local Hobby Expo being held at our town's community center. This was the second year they've asked me to have characters in costume walking around and it seemed like a great excuse to show off this build. As soon as I got my buddy strapped into the suit and checked to make sure he'd be alright to move around in it, we stepped out of the dressing room and were instantly swarmed by people clamoring for photos:

He didn't manage to take even two steps without being stopped and getting mobbed by folks looking to pose with him:

The 501st had a detachment on location as well, so I caught a few good shots with some of them:

Vader loved the suit:

Still, despite all the attention, I did manage to get him away for a moment to get some decent showcase photos:

I snapped quite a lot and it's taken me a while to pick my favorite. I think this is it:

Then again, there's always this shot:

Did you actually read the thread?

I'm going to go with no. I'm always tempted to mess with these folks who ask questions that make it clear they can't be bothered to read any of the text that goes with the pictures.

No. It's not made of wood. The wood is just the prototype. Once I've finished coating it in shellac I wait for the naturally occurring oils in the wood to turn the coating pink (that's how you can tell it's ripe) then I slather on a layer of Easy-Cheez to make a mold before building the actual wearable parts out of plaster of Paris. For the light-up parts I mix in the liquid from a pair of "Rave-Master" white glow sticks (available at K-mart) and it's ready to go.

They're probably not going to read my answer either, so it doesn't make much difference. :ninja
