Thorin's map attempt

I'm a fan of the Hobbit (the book and the movie) and was inspired by Tolkien's and Weta's Thorin's map so I decided to make my own. Including the moon runes. So here is my attempt at Thorin's Map from the Hobbit. I wanted the map to feel older and more ancient than the Weta map. Everything on the map was inked and aged by hand. Hope everyone likes it.

I'm working on a frame for it that will also hold Weta's Key of Erebor prop below the map. It will have warm LED side lighting from the front and a proximity sensor that will switch to cool LED back lighting for the moon runes when you raise you hand near that part of the map.

Definitely keep us updated on that.

Also can you provide a little more info on what you have done already.
Mainly which, paper, pens, inks were used and weathering techniques.

My goto weathered paper technique has always just been teabags, but I quite like how yours works.

I used Saunders Waterford 90lb watercolor paper for the map. It has a nice heavy weight to handle all of the distressing without falling apart. The weathering involved a lot of different things: tea, used coffee grounds, dry paint pigment and some heat gun.
The ink I used was Winsor and newton calligraphy ink with an old glass calligraphy pen.

Your post title is wrong. It should say Thorin's map success! or something like that. Great work.

I can't wait to see the display that sounds great. How will you place/aim the proximity sensor?
