Things you're tired of seeing in movies

I think it was mentioned before, but dumb characters in horror movies only acting dumb to get the plot moving. I would much rather watch smart people struggle to survive and succumb to fear and still fail. It makes both the victims, but also the "monster" appear more formidable and makes you care more about the characters.

Another thing is lazy dumb characterization just to get you to care about a character, but which them makes you aware of the fact they will most surely die.
I was thinking of this when I was watching Chopping Mall today :)

I'm also going with shaky cam, my number one peeve.

Yeah…I was watching the latest episode of Severance when the “shaky cam” become overkill…like I was watching the scene through the eyes of someone experiencing an earthquake.

Reminds me of "clicks". Do military guys really use that term?

Some do, and like any job, some people get made fun of. :)

You all have to remember…these are largely the “drama club kids” dressing-up and pretending to “play soldier” in movies and TV shows…. There is going to be a lot of inauthentic portrayals exhibited, as a result…

In addition… most modern Hollywood writers, directors, etc. never personally served (as opposed to prior generations) and have a very “childlike” understanding of the military that cuts just a bit above an episode of G.I. Joe.

There really are no “Jimmy Stewarts” in modern Hollywood….for those who don’t know, Jimmy Stewart was a real World War II bomber pilot and attained the rank of Brigadier General during the course of his service.

I get your point, but there are some. Adam Driver (USMC) and Rob Riggle (USMC).

That was deliberate for that particular episode. It was intended to add a feeling of chaos to certain scenes. Overall, the show avoids the shaky cam, which I abhor as well.

Shaky-cam has been HORRIBLY overdone in the last 25 years. Especially in non-action situations. A bit of subtle movement can accomplish the same "naturalism" without being disorienting & annoying.

I would like to take this moment in history to coin a phrase..... drum rollllllllll...... trumpets.......

"If this camera's rockin, don't bother watchin"

There, it is done. I have spoken.

Hand-held (or shaky cam as Captain Dunsel said) can be interesting in certain action shots...but should be used sparingly non-the-less (like LENS FLARES!). Too much of a good thing as they say...:rolleyes::(:(

You know, I wouldn’t call what they are doing in shows like Severance as much “shaky cam” as I would call it “wandering handheld cam”…here, they intentionally give the camera a “handheld” quality where the camera man constantly moves the camera up / down, side-to-side—without stopping—to try to give the viewer some artificial sense of verisimilitude…but once you notice it in a scene, it throws you out of
the scene and becomes an irritant.

Here is an example …just watch the frame constantly bounce up-and-down / side-to-side…and no, it’s not because it has some action in the scene…this is a typically framed scene in Season 2 (spoiler if you have not seen Season 2, Episode 4):

Give me a “locked-down” series of shots that lets me concentrate on what is IN the frame vs. having to be distracted by THE FRAME ITSELF.

The first series that I recall using “wandering handheld cam” was the rebooted Battlestar Galactica…but it was much more subtle than what I see in current shows.
