I hate to call these pieces "stunt" and "hero" but it seems to be the typical way we label props...
The monitors that all of the soliders wear simply have black painted lids with no features. However, on the "hero" monitor that we see close up, there is some type of rubber or elastic strap attached to the lid that causes the lid to snap up when the latch is triggered. While it seems to have effectively created a functioning lid, it is cumbersome, ugly and doesn't represent what we see most of the time in the movie. With that in mind, I don't think I will create my lid to be functional unless I can detemine a way to add an internal spring to the lid that can't be seen.
