The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

I suppose while one waits for 6+ months to roll by…….one can take up some of that time playing Star Trek RPG’s (Role Playing Games)

Oh look! A game with a strapped Tricorder box to store the game in…..made by

I ran into the Wand Company dudes at a pub in San Diego during comicon, and they had the tricorder with them! Got to play with and poke at it for a few minutes. First impressions where this:

1. VERY clean and nice looking.
2. The display screen is CRAZY crisp and the image is incredibly sharp. I had no idea a monitor that small could have that high resolution. Screen was also really bright. We were outdoors during the day and I had no problem seeing the display.
3. The speaker grill looked right to my eyes, as did the wheel hubs knobby jobbies.
4. Overall, it just felt "right" to me.
5. The curve to the monitor/screen looked right to me.

I've owned a few different makers tricorders over the years, though I wouldn't say I'm a super expert on the piece. Glad I ran into those dudes as they also seemed super chill.

MattMunson, how did it feel in your hands? Did it have some weight to it? How was the Kydex pattern? From pictures and videos to date it looks barely visible. Was the moire motor quiet? It may have been too loud where you were when you handled it to tell.

Thanks for the report?

Now that you mention it I do recall the kydex pattern being subtle. I cannot depend on my memory of it though because I was not paying attention to that, as I was captivated by the high quality of the display screen. Definitely felt good in the hand, though that's not a value add to me. I remember thinking "yup this is what I expect a tricorder to feel like" but that's a magical metric and will be different for everyone else.

OH i also opened up the lower compartment and remember thinking the pivot mechanism was very smooth and felt substantial. Did not feel flimsy.

Re the kydex patter, this was for sure a pre-production model so who knows maybe they will deepen that in the production release. I think time has shown again and again that The Wand Company gets it figured out at the end of the day, and I have faith in them and their team.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Very cool that you got to handle one of their Tricorders.

TWC went to considerable effort to get the kydex texture correct this time around. Here's their explanation in Update #9.

Fanatico, I believe that's the exact tricorder I got to play with. The two green circular decals are the giveaways. Looks like the kydex pattern is looking pretty good now that I see your photo!
