The Walking Dead Season 3

I'm sure I would learn how to use a katana after a few months of training on fresh zombies, so I guess real world training is the best training you can get!

"I did fencing when I was little. Do it again in college -- got pretty good at it. It was a good way to let off some steam during my seventeen years or so of college." - Michonne, Issue #26, page 15,
That is more dialogue than she has spoken in the series so far.

But fencing wouldn't teach you squat about using a katana, there are no 2 handed weapons in fencing and the only cut and thrust weapon is the sabre but sabre fencing techniques wouldn't translate well to the katana. Some sort of dedicated katana training like iaido or kenjutsu would explain her skill, even basic techniques learned in another martial arts class but I'm not sure that a cardio class using a katana would help all that much. If I had to take a guess I'd say that a Samurai Warrior Workout has about as much relation to real Japanese swordsmanship as cadio kickboxing has to real kickboxing. Still, it is better than nothing and I suppose that if one survived as long as Michonne has you'd probably have learned to translate your workout skills to actual zombie killing skills.

Unless they're using the term "fencing" to apply to all types of swordplay? Otherwise I couldn't agree more. :thumbsup

The thing is that the anatomy of the blade and how to effectively weild it are things that must be taught. It took the Japanese nearly 1,000 yrs to fully develop the katana and the associated katas. This had as much to do with perfecting the metallurgy of the blade as it did with understanding human biology.

Yes, anyone could pick up a modern 440 SS bladed katana and baseball swing the crap out of it. They might be effective in TWD, but lack the elegance and precision of a true swordsman.

Real swords, depending on the time period, culture and specific blade, often use several grades of iron and are differentially tempered. Using a 440 blade against a "fresh" zombie, if you hit major bones (i.e. skull), the blade will likely fracture/break or the "rat tail" tang weld will break because the temper of stainless steel is too brittle for most of the blade and too soft for the edge.

If we are playing by the rules though, the Gerber AR that Andrea has brained no less than 3 walkers with so far with would have snapped the first time it hit bone.

Logic need not apply.

Oh and I hope Maggie knows about the recall on that Parang she favors.

But you're forgetting the argument that the zombies are rotted and thus the bones are softer which is why everybody is able to brain walkers with as little as a steak knife without snapping the blade.

I know really?! Surprised no one has brought up "that special" time of the month for the ladies. Not like you can just stroll to the grocery store, and we know the walkers have a strong sense of smell.

Just saying.

Pretty certain most of us, both male and female, prefer to pretend that Shark Week doesn't exist, especially in apocalyptic fiction. Just saps the fun out of everything.

*head desk*

Well if you want to get THAT technical...all that stress and malnutrition would make falling over to the communist side a little harder.

This is what I assumed as well, so it became a non-issue to me. Besides women existed for 10s of thousands of years before Kotex. :lol

Actually, Glen did bring it up.

Anyway, we have 2 months until the next episode. What do we have to do besides nitpick? Isn't that what the internet is for?

I haven't seen E8 yet. but did everyone else feel that E7 was a bit too rape-y for them?

I thought they handled it pretty well, it was a great way to show how evil the Gov could be. I know everyone is gonna add "Well it's nothing like in the comics".

Not really, no. I thought it fit and helped cement the governor as an evil ******* even moreso than we already knew him to be. And he didn't actually do anything -- just threatened it.
