The Walking Dead Season 3

If her backstory from the comics is anything like what she is supposed to be in the show, then she has zero training. She's a lawyer who knew her neighbour collected swords and she suspected the neighbour killed her cat. She has no training and I honestly believe that she acts the way she does and says so little because its a front. In that type of world it's a kill or be killed scenario, if you come off as weak then you're toast.

As for kendo, I realize that it's very formalized and basically the Japanese equivalent of fencing but I'd argue that it's not completely useless in a zombie apocalypse. You still learn basic moves in kendo, moves that should transfer from a shinai or boken to a real blade, moves that should be more than adequate against an opponent that's not wielding another blade against you or really fighting back for that matter. The only thing would be, just like someone trained in real sword fighting techniques or with guns, learning to aim for the head as much as possible.

I took Kendo for a while at a Japanese school in Tennessee. It was hella fun, and a great workout. Kicked my ass regularly. I wouldn't say that Kendo would likely be all that useful in a zombie apocalypse, but it's better than nothing, especially with the Men strike.

Here's a quick rundown on my realworld expertise, 10+ yrs Army & USAF (special training in CBRNE, HAZMAT, HAZWOPR, Incident Command, EOD, beddown & SERE), 15+ yrs western martial arts specifically melee weapons from 1066-1605AD, 20+ yrs asian martial arts (TKD, Judo, Aikido, Karate, JKD & kickboxing) with 3 blackbelts and instructor certifications, 18+ yrs various asian weapons (including the katana & wakizashi).

Sounds like if this zombie thing ever happens I want you in my group

It's also been 8+ months or so since the apocalypse, plenty of time for on the job experience to be gained. If she hadn't excelled, she'd be dead. Maybe she watched a lot of kung fu too.

It's been longer than 8 months. Lori got pregnant maybe 6-7 months after the apocalypse then 9 months being pregnant so if I had to guess, I would have to say its been at least a year and 3 months which proves your point even more so I don't know why I wrote this. I guess to accurately describe the time frame. :)

Yeah, I don't think it was exactly clear how long it had gone down since Rick jumped in well after it all went down. Did Lori go full term? I know we had a 6 month jump from Season 2 to 3, and she and Shane had been messing around at least a while before Rick showed back up. So they are probably looking at 12-15 months at this point. I was really disappointed they skipped the winter months and the frozen walkers in the suburbs.

Yeah, the frozen zombies would of been something different and cool to see. I am sad they didn't do it. We haven't really seen anything different than the regular ol' zombie. The armless, mouthless ones the Michonne had were different but nothing else.

Season 1 and the first half of Season 2 took place within one month. After "Nebraska", it was a week by week basis until it lead into winter (Lori performed her pregnancy test during the first half of Season 2, which was still during the first month of the zombie apocalypse. That means she was at least a couple of weeks and a couple of days pregnant). By the time Season 3 occurs, she's already 9 months pregnant. So, at minimum, it's been 9 months since the start of the zombie apocalypse, give or take 6 days (remember, Rick had been in the hospital at least a week before the outbreak became really noticeable and it had been at most three days after Shane left him in the hospital in the flashback before he woke up, as the IV bag that kept him hydrated only lasts for at least for a 24 hour period, 72 hours at most depending on how slow the drip is set. This is an important factor, as a human being can only last 3 days without water and a couple of weeks without food, depending on the human being's health and body type. And before you cite Aron Ralston and his five days of being trapped in a canyon due to his arm being pinned to a wall due to a heavy boulder, keep in mind that he was an experienced climber and knew how to ration his water supply for a three day period, which after it was gone he began to drink his own urine).

For the comics itself, it's been over two years where they are current at for that particular version of the story.

I thought they said in the first couple of episodes that Lori was overdue, I'm sure either Carol or Hershel said so...

I was kind of surprised they didn't write in Michonne seeing the heads of her walkers in the tank, I was expecting that to fuel her rage

You definitely could be right, but so could I....guess we'll have to wait and see.

Agreed about Carl, he has come a long way from not staying in the house.

The brand is Gerber,...pretty much almost every knife on the show is from Gerber

EDIT: Thought you were talking about his main knife

I thinks The Gov's knife is a custom in this pic

Wow. Thanks for the detailed explanation. That sounds more accurate. :)

You're welcome. I could be wrong about my statement of course (as I'm going from what I remember from the show and knowledge I've picked up along the way). But like I said, the amount of time I stated (9 months, give or take six days) is "at least" (meaning that's the lowest it could possibly be). The prisoners in the cafeteria in Season 3's "Sick" stated they were locked in about almost 10 months (which can be considered the maximum). But all and all, the info I provided is just my guess based on what I know and what is presented in the show.

I don't know what's taught in these classes besides sword techniques but I don't think they're going to be spending a whole lot of time on punching, kicking, holds, and throws.

I can't say for sure either, but IMO learning one without the other doesn't make for a well rounded fighter.

If her backstory from the comics is anything like what she is supposed to be in the show, then she has zero training. In that type of world it's a kill or be killed scenario, if you come off as weak then you're toast.

If that holds true for the series, then she's been inaccurately portrayed. Someone could pick up one of the easily attainable crap katanas and be effective enough to survive, but most of her sword work is too good for an untrained amateur even after 10 months you just don't get that good.

so were all in geek agreement, sword girl doesnt work outside of the comic book.

Anyone else notice the surprisingly lack of any Starbucks even in the zombi apocalypse world?

Actually, you're wrong about her having no training in the comic. She does have training. She even says so herself:

"I did fencing when I was little. Do it again in college -- got pretty good at it. It was a good way to let off some steam during my seventeen years or so of college." - Michonne, Issue #26, page 15, center panel (which I recently had read, which is how I know of the citing of the sword training, primarily because Glenn and Rick ask her about it after witnessing her dispatching another zombie they didn't even notice was near by).

So, if the TV show's version of her has the same background as in the comic, she does have some training with swords and probably continued with them afterwards as a stress relief from work (in fact, there are places that offer Samurai Sword training as a workout. One such example I pulled up in the Atlanta area: Bien-Aimé Strength & Stretch Studio has a "Samurai Warrior Workout"). So, it's not so much of a stretch to guess that Michonne may have been signed up for such a workout training after college and went there twice a week. Plus, I think swordfighting of any kind is a skill you'd least likely to forget (especially if you use it to blow off steam)

Well, she's not a mute moron in the comic, so apples to oranges. She's not working in the show because she's being handled so poorly.

They refused to give advertising dollars to the show.

(Who am I kidding, I have no idea)

But fencing wouldn't teach you squat about using a katana, there are no 2 handed weapons in fencing and the only cut and thrust weapon is the sabre but sabre fencing techniques wouldn't translate well to the katana. Some sort of dedicated katana training like iaido or kenjutsu would explain her skill, even basic techniques learned in another martial arts class but I'm not sure that a cardio class using a katana would help all that much. If I had to take a guess I'd say that a Samurai Warrior Workout has about as much relation to real Japanese swordsmanship as cadio kickboxing has to real kickboxing. Still, it is better than nothing and I suppose that if one survived as long as Michonne has you'd probably have learned to translate your workout skills to actual zombie killing skills.

You're totally right. After I posted, I started to second guess myself because I thought that I remembered something about her doing fencing but I was way too lazy to dig through my trades to find out of she did. I figured someone would chime in haha.
