The Walking Dead: Dale's Winnebago

Anyone every see Race to Witch Mountain?

There's a strip in the middle of the front panel that could be covering some small vents?

It's curious that the RV would be parked near the set in Georgia. Why isn't it in storage somewhere in Los Angeles by now? Makes me think they're going to use it in season 4.

2 thoughts come to mind. First, since AMC has not done any TWD filming in LA, it's possible they don't have any storage space out there. Since they have a substantial amount of storage space at Raleigh studios in GA, then it would make sense to leave it there. Secondly, I'm sure it doesn't make logistical or financial sense tro drive that RV (or load it onto a rail car) all the way to LA from Georgia.

Additionally, I can't really see them doing an RV flashback considering the fact that most of the characters from the "RV era" are dead. I can't see AMC bringing back the RV without having at least Dale, Shane or Andrea. I would venture to say that the RV is done. Or at least that's what I'm hoping so they'll be willing to sell it. :)

I thought at one time someone had posted a pic of a storage yard that had all the vehicles in it. But it could be anywhere. We know it went to New York. I tried looking at satellite images for it but couldn't get a good view. If you look at the studio or prison can't really see anything unless they are all inside.

You know, I'm surprised AMC hasn't done a WD TV movie (like how the RIS BSG did Razor) in between seasons, getting the actors who are dead back to play the roles of their characters, showing how they all hooked up and formed the Atlanta group before Rick radioed in "Days Gone Bye".

But does AMC have any kind of permanent/long-term storage in LA? What I'm suggesting is that if they do have permanent storage in LA, and never intend to use the RV again, I figure they would have put it in storage by now. Unless they're doing multiple series in Georgia, and not just The Walking Dead, then there isn't much reason to keep it in Georgia.
However, you bring up a good point in that they might be planning to sell it.

Or they are gonna open up a walking dead theme ride and park it out front to rot for the next 20 years

Do you have an address for where it is supposedly stored at? I could maybe take a day trip and see what trouble I can get into.

I wonder if the RV they got to use in the show had overheating issues. Hence the added vents in the front. They may have just rolled with the fact it overheated and wrote it into the series. I don't have anything to back this up, just thinking out loud.

There is some evidence to support your theory.
I saw a video some time ago. Somebody on the show mentioned it was costing a fortune to keep the winnebago working. So it's very likely it overheated frequently.

Ah, and THAT would be why they wrote in its death scene at the barn, rather than let the group keep it all the way to the prison as in the comics.

One reason why, at least.

I bet its the crew lunchroom on shoot days now ;)

Also, you cant see Dales fingers through the vents so they could just be stuck on.

If the lighting was bright enough to show Dale's fingers, then it would also show the white surface of the Winnebago if they're just stuck on.

Since you can't see the white surface of the Winnebago, the lighting is too dim, and you probably wouldn't see Dale's fingers anyway even if there were holes.

I was recently vacationing in Orlando and visited Universal Studios. They have a haunted house for Halloween Horror Nights that features the Walking Dead. So there were lots of TWD vehicles stationed around the park for promotion.... including Dale's RV. After my initial excitment, I began looking closely at the RV. I noticed that this was very much a "prop" designed for this purpose and not the ACTUAL RV used in the show. My wife thought I was crazy for being so picky and I'm probably the only one who visits Universal Studios and makes a big deal about the lack of accuracy in the Walking Dead vehicles! haha. But anywho, here are some pictures (I also threw in a pic of Rick's tank)

Some key variances include the following:

  • Driver side of the RV was not painted to match the color scheme that they used on the passenger side. This RV was clearly meant to sit, facing a certain direction without someone walking behind it.
  • Front grill is missing the custom vents.

Pretty sure we see the actual RV burn up next to the barn in the season two finale.

I thought I mentioned this before but I couldn't find it the thread anywhere. So I'll share it now. :)

Several months back I spoke with a guy who works on the crew for the Walking Dead. He confirmed my suspicions that multiple RVs were used in filming. In fact, at LEAST 3 were used. They had 2 of the 1973 Chieftains and one Brave (likely a 1973).

The Brave is a shorter model (roughly 20 ft instead of 27 ft) but it's body style is similar. The body style was close enough that from a distance, you couldn't tell a difference. In fact, it's so convincing, you wouldn't even notice that the replica i showed in my last post (from Universal Studios) is actually the shorter Brave model (Compare my picture from Universal Studios and the screen caps from the show and you'll notice the difference). All that being said, the showrunners used the shorter Brave model to burn up in the Season 2 finale instead of the Chieftain that they used in the close up scenes.

As for the two Chieftains, they used one primarily for driving/parking shots and they had the second Chieftain that was used mostly for interior shooting.

Bottom line, THE RV STILL LIVES!! One of the Chieftains made an appearance at New York Comic Con in 2012. Since then, the last time it was spotted was by my crew member insider when he saw it stored in a secured lot at the Raliegh Studios in Senoia, GA. Maybe i'll get my hands on one some day. If not, maybe i can just get a Brave and doctor it up like Universal Studios did! :)

I'm sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but I'm wondering something: Has anyone found all the stickers used on Dale's RV? I mean, I've been trying to find all of them, and found one close to the one used in the show for one of them (the W.I.T. 365 Club decal, but the one I have text is bolded and the rocking chair is a different color). I can't seem to identify the other stickers (mainly the Winnebago related decals on the back, such as one that appears to have a confederate soldier with a confederate flag inside an outline of the state of Georgia, and another that appears to have a knight in a suit of armor on a horse and something about the weather, which appears on the front and the back of the RV).
