The Vault 53 Issue Utility Jumpsuit! COMPLETE 4/29/14

Hey Guys. Been a while since my last posting... Then again, I'm not a well known guy here, so there's that. ANYWAY, I'm starting a new project, one I was hoping to start within the last 12 months, but ti took me until now to get up to the point where I could start. I had just ordered Skruffy's Pipboy 3000 shell and hand plate and I have high hopes to get that started when it arrives.

Well, before I get too crazy, I was wondering what the difference was between the Vault 101 Utility Jumpsuit (Vault 101 utility jumpsuit - The Fallout wiki - Fallout: New Vegas and more) and the Modified Utility Jumpsuit (Modified utility jumpsuit - The Fallout wiki - Fallout: New Vegas and more).

Now, I know in the Wikis provided, the Normal one "Has Red Sneaker Boots" and the modified one has "Green versions of the boots." Well, I went to a Youtube Video outlining all the unique attire in the game and the Modified suit has the red sneaker boots. Here's the video at the time mark so you can see what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=_uuj1zrvTvw#t=210

I'm just asking for a confirmation if what I'm looking at on the Wikis are either right or wrong. I keep hearing it's wrong, but I just wanna make sure.

ONTO THE FUN STUFF!

Like I said, I'm making a Vault Utility Jumpsuit.

I picked this instead of a normal Vault Jumpsuit is because not only is it easier to construct, but it seems like it'd be more comfortable to wear as well as the fact I always played a guy with an extremely high repair set. Makes sense I'd be a repair guy, right?

At first I figured, I'd use a blue flight suit. After rolling it around in the head, I didn't think it'd look right with all those damn pockets and zippers. Going to the local Army/Navy Surplus store, I looked to see if there was something still military based that could be used, and behold, I found it:
1894-2.jpg

US Navy Regulation Coveralls. This is a picture of one from the net, but the one I bought looks the same with a few added details. What I was planning on was taking the pockets from the chest and placing them on the sides of the legs like the Vault suit. The collar would have to modified to be more Mandarin collar-like, but that won't be too hard. I might just have a friend of mine who's better at the sewing thing do this for me. I'm a prop/electronics guy and sewing isn't my bag.

I really want Sneaker Boots, but I wanna be accurate (enough) so people could go, "HOLY CRAP, VAULT UTILITY GUY!" so I gotta see what the answer is on this one. Never the less, I found that Converse can actually make the shoes for you!

Works out nicely, eh? They used to be standard in their regular store, then they decided to be weiners and remove them. Oh, well.

I still have to ponder the belt construction and get screen shots. From what I saw the utility jumpsuit doesn't have the odd design on the back of the belt like the regular suit has, but I still gotta check with the experts here to make sure I got everything I need before I proceed.

Any suggestions you might wanna add? I would appreciate whatever help you folks have.

Please guys. If I don't get any answers, I'm gonna be stuck! Please help.

Re: Fallout 3 Vault Utility Jumpsuit (Currently have a question)

I can't confirm the Wiki's information (no FO3 around here at work ;)), but I immediatelly imagined a suit with red converse boots when I read your thread title... If you like to go for total accuray, I'd either play the game and take screenshots or export the texture from the game files to make sure the color is correct... I'd go for the red boots, BTW, they fit the blue/yellow suit perfectly IMO!

Re: Fallout 3 Vault Utility Jumpsuit (Currently have a question)

First thing that popped in my head, you could take a regular cheap belt en use foam to construct the actual look.

Re: Fallout 3 Vault Utility Jumpsuit (Currently have a question)

Go back to the surplus store and pick up a few belts and pouches. They can always be altered and dyed (pretty easily I might add) to make what you see in your original photo.
If you're into buying something off the shelf, an airsoft "Battle belt" looks realllllllly similar and can be had in a desert tan color you could easily weather with fabric dye and acrylic paint.

Like this from Amazon... 417lHhYjr7L.jpg

You'll have to make up your own buckle, but that's an easy task with some Sculpy, and oven and a little effort.

Re: Fallout 3 Vault Utility Jumpsuit (Currently have a question)

After going nuts and digging around EVERYWHERE, I found the Modified jumpsuit and the regular do not change in design. Same red boots. I did find that there's a guy who made a mod for the suit for Fallout 3 where it looks dirtier and that the female version of that suit had the green boots. That might have been where this info came from, but since I'm a guy, I am not worried about it.

Someone does need to change that damn Wiki article, though.

Anywho, I got my materials ready for the suit aside of belt and boots. I also got my essential prop piece in yesterday:

Problem is, I can't fit in it. I hate altering resin casts...

Well, for the moment, I at least got my suit ready for alteration. Went out and got me a few things...

61DXgNVA3SS._SL1361_.jpgnat-nast-sea-worthy-t-shirt-short-sleeve-for-men-in-sunset-yellow~p~6043w_07~1500.2.jpgHat-baseball-red-icon.png2140-ray-ban-wayfarer.jpg

I need to actually take my own pictures, but I'm lazy. Yes, I got two yellow t shirts - one for stripes/number, one for wearing under the suit - a red hat to use like the pre-war baseball hat, and a pair of dork glasses for Wasteland reading glasses

I decided to go with Vault 53 as my Vault number. In real life I'm a repairman, so it would make sense I'd be a VaulTec Engineer in one of the most broken down Vaults in the network. I was also thinking of adding a tool pouch to my belt, but I was also planning on adding an old leather messenger bag too. Not sure if the tool pouch would be excessive or not. I know, it's my own taste, but I don't wanna appear cluttered.

We're see where this goes in the coming weeks!

Re: Fallout 3 Vault Utility Jumpsuit - Gathering Materials!

How's it going? I'm working on a jumpsuit too, two actually. One ladies cut and one to make up a vault lab uniform. I think red high top chucks are perfect, I always thought that's what the sneakers were. "Converse dominated the U.S. sneaker market from the 1920s until the 1970s" - wikipedia. Converse would make a good fit for the fallout universe.

Re: Fallout 3 Vault Utility Jumpsuit - Gathering Materials!

The sneakers I got were the x-hi versions. You can't buy them premade, you have to use Converse's shoe customizer. It's a pain and it's more expansive, but at least it's accurate.

Good luck on the suit. Hope yours goes smoother than mine.

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Utility Jumpsuit! Update 4/19/14

Yikes! I started this thread almost 3 months ago to the day! A lot of crap has changed since then.

To start, I put the suit on the back burner because what good is the suit without the Pipboy? I finally got it done, so I started on the suit.

Well, here it is, MY pictures of my materials.
1491665_10201915554159007_3814746529741037060_n.jpg

If the picture's a little blurry, I blame the damn camera on my phone. Anyway, I found that the suit I was going to use was too small for me. I was hoping to lose some more weight to fit in it, but I guess even my chest size hated me. I thought it was just my gut that was in the way. Proved me wrong. Anyhow, I had to go find a new suit, and lookie what I found!

If anyone's interested in the suit itself, it's a Royal Blue (54) 60120 Fire Resistant Coverall set made by Red Wing Shoes. I was going to get paint for the Pipboy at a Hardware Closeout store in my area when I saw these chillin' on a rack in the store. It was the perfect color and size! Here's the site for you to see for yourself - Red Wing Safety Boots - 60120 Red Wing Men's - Desert/Tropical FR Coverall

I started by folding over the collar and ironing it into a crease. After I used stitch witchery to hold it in place, I ironed on the collar numbers.
10156084_10201953924838250_7900122710913907082_n.jpg

After removing the front diagonal zip pockets and cutting out the stripes for the front, more stitch witchery.
1175572_10201958551593916_3794215431694751353_n.jpg

I didn't get a picture of this, and I hate myself for it, but I pulled the back pockets off the butt of he suit and transplanted them on the sides. This really worked out because the Vault suits in the game have no back pockets, but did have sides pockets. Beautiful, is it not?

With the spare material left from the various useless pockets that needed removal, I managed to add some extra detail. The last picture shows some of this, but it's not as clear. I got another mid-progress picture that might illustrate this point further.
1545144_10201958371909424_3327956135504153361_n.jpg

After getting the front of the suit done, I printed out the number 53 in 800 pt Monofonto and cut them out. After tracing around the number on the back of a sheet of heat bond, I bonded the sheet to my little T-shirt and cut them out.

Iron Time!
10015650_10201958236226032_2235462863434409315_n.jpg

Now, what's left to be done:
1.) Need to add more material to the underside of the zipper flap. Looks kinda bad up close.
2.) Need to reposition the "53". The patches started coming off after a light wash, but I noticed they were in the wrong spot anyway. Might be wise to fix that while the opportunity is there.
3.) Still need to install the clasps for the pant leg straps.
4.) The belt. Have to finish the belt.
5.) Need to fix the side pockets. First time using Stitch Witchery, I was kinda clueless as to how it worked,

Looks like a great start! The only real difference in the suits besides the kicks is that shoulder comm piece, the leather forearm cuffs and sadly no pipboy but I don't think it would matter too much if you wear one. Also your 3 should be a flat top 3, not a round top. My vault suit came out like crap because I made it in less than a day. I'm keeping an eye on this thread for sure. Keep up the great work.

Actually, unless I was going with Old School Fallout 1 and 2 numbers, it would be. See, this is more based off 3/New Vegas, so the number 3 is rounded.

Nevertheless, I got some work left to do on this thing. Thanks for the positive feedback!

Re: The Vault 53 Issue Utility Jumpsuit! Update 4/19/14

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. I was kinda in a hurry to get this costume done. Here it is, the finished suit!

I'll show you the belt construction first.
10245575_10201995118468065_1847300053369090436_n.jpg1901784_10201995118228059_4714906258661903581_n.jpg

Using brown 5mm craft foam, I cut it into rectangles then placed it on a much larger piece of foam which is then placed onto the belt. After using hot glue (that was dumb of me, I might fix that later) I painted the belt with acrylic gold paint. I did a light layer to show the brown foam through to make it look more gritty. While the paint was still semi wet, I hit the belt with flat black spray paint. After all the paint dried I dry brushed silver over the edges and added little dots on the rectangles to represent screws. The silver weathering isn't visible on the on the two pictures above, but they are on the finished pictures.

Speaking of...

Dude, that is a sweet suit!!!

Oh and you mentioned having to modify your Pipboy cast? What exactly did you do to it to make it work? I'm wondering because I am thinking of ordering one, but I have the fear of it not fitting. :(

I just had to grind it out withough making the shell too thin. As you grind it out, hold it up to the light so you can see how thin the resin is getting.

Your suit came out great! It is always nice to see Fallout costumes being made out there. Makes me want to revisit my vault suit now.
