The totally rebuilt sonic screwdriver

We needed a more prop looking sonic for our film. So, starting with the character options, I did a complete overhaul. Sanded the body and use crackle paint. Took out the push tabs and closed them in. Moved the switch to the slider button. Puttied in the seams on the endcap. Sanded the seams in the head. Painted it with aluminum, then dull coated it. As you see, it also now lights up in any position. Oh, yea, replaced the neck with acrtlic rod and used black and red wires. Bad side, had to lose the sound so it could be dubbed in in post! Replaced the led with a bright white, shines blue through the cap.

Soooooo, whadda ya think? This will go up for sale after the scenes it's in are shot, to help finance the rest of the film.

Very nice!

How did you get the wiring to work with the slider on the top, being the toy has the screw there?

Took about a week to figure that out! The top cap even comes off still! Drilled a hole through the cap to fit the switch in snug. Soldered wires on the leads, they're both negative wires, the switch is just a break in the circuit. The part that screws down into the slider shaft had a large section carved out for the wires to run down past. That way the cap still snaps on snug. I had to cut the slider groove out an extra 1/8 of an inch to accomodate the wires running from the cap and down into the shaft. The end piece that used to be an ink nib now comes off for battery replacement. Does any of that make sense? I'll post pics in a few days.

Makes a sort of sense, pictures would help of course moreso! Thank you for the run down though!

How possible do you think it would be to keep the sound in for someone not nessesarily concerned about that?

Great to hear!

Also did you adjust the size of the handle at all to bring it more in line with the prop? Best mods I have seen for it have droped almost 3/4" to look better.

I think I see what you have done, I would definitly like to see some more detailed photos to try myself or get someone with skill enough to help me with my own. I like the mods you did and they are a great way to have a grat prop while awaiting the MFX replica :)

Yes, sorry, meant to explain that. I did shorten the handle a bit, you can see it on the end, not much, I made the neck a little longer so I had to leave enough so that it would fold down inside.

And yes, I am most definitly in agreement with the MFX! I need one, not want, but NEED one. I'm currently putting aside $40.00 a month hoping to get a jump on saving up for it.

I have much faith in them! I just do not know when it will be done! The wait is agonizing, along with my new suits :)

Were the mods you did very time consuming? You mentioned you would be selling off this one, but have you considered do a small quantity of Toy mods? I notice there is a number who are interested in your one modded toy :)

Even if the body was left for us to do, so long as the wiring and the slider was taken care of, and depending in MFXs time line I would be very interested myself in any run offered, otherwise a walk through and some pictures and I can try myself, hopefully not super complicated :)

If I was going to leave the sound in, I wouldn't shorten the length of the body any. There are four wires running from the neck of the emitter. Two for the sound board and two for the power, so some jiggery pokery would be needed to make it looklike just two wires were in the clear acrylic. It wasn't too long of a porject, of course watching the series thee DVD's helped to inspire and pass the time.

Small run..........
PM me, I might be able to fit two or thee into the schedule.
