The Thing prequel

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

The reason it being the first 15 minutes aboard the ship is it shows why the ship crashed, the aliens fight to recapture the Thing and making a film set in the early 80's appear completely modern for the 15 minute tv teaser that would be shown on television. Its not just a marketing ploy but something fans of the Carpenter version have wanted to see. Im just not holding any faith what so ever in the final product even more so now based on that teaser trailer. Sadly, it looks souless, bland and too clean and dont go into the "its just a teaser" argument. That film was due out long ago yet bad decisions made by production and whom should do what job have put it where its at, the dollar DVD bin even before its been seen.

While I agree it wouldn't be necessary to show the crash in this new movie, you're dead wrong about how the original film could have done without it.

You start out with an alien space craft crashing into Earth. First impression I got when I saw this as a kid was that there was going to be little green men who were going to invade us. Than we cut to a sequence with a helicopter trying to shoot/blow up a dog.....

Huh? I just watched a UFO crash into Earth! What the heck does chasing the dog in the middle of all this snow have to do with that?

*finishes the film*

Oh.... I get it....

That for me is one of the more memorable openings in any film period. It gives you one thing, throws you something completely different and you're left wondering how those two are related to each other. But by the end, they fit together perfectly.

I'm with you on this one...that first shot set the tone for the whole movie for me. loved it. :thumbsup

the trailer looks good (which doesn't mean anything) BUt gonna go on faith on this one...gonna see it for sure.

Geeses..."Hollywood's" desperation KNOWS NO BOUNDS.When they get down to re-making films from the past or making prequels to generate dollars, they are getting REALLY DESPERATE for material.Re-Making TV shows was a trend in the late 80's and early/mid 90's, but now this is just a F*&%!?*&$!#ing joke. This is a BAD IDEA though and through.Remaking John Carpenter's "The Thing" or making a pre-quell of it? Why don't they just make a prequel or remake "Close Encounters of the Third Kind",or maybe "JAWS?"Hell, why stop there? The might as well take a stab at making a pre-quel of E.T or Poltergist while they are at it.Hollywood ****** bag studio corporations never cease to amaze me.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

Sigh. No need to whine about it. Just don't watch it.

For me, it has the look and feel of Carpenter's version. As far as everything else goes, it's just a trailer. Carpenter's trailer did not look all that appealing eigther, yet I still really, enjoyed the film.

yes, I'm sure it won't please everyone, and yes...I'm sure it's basically going to be a carbon copy of Carpenter's version with the same things happening at the Norwegian camp. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing everything that happened up till the point when we see the Choppa chasing the Husky toward Outpost 31.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

I would have much rather they just remade the 1950s one and had it tie in somehow as a prequel.

Isn't that exactly what they did, with the exception of it being the Norwegian camp?

The plot synopsis of the 50's "Thing From Another World":
Scientist at an Arctic research station discover a spacecraft buried in the ice. Upon closer examination, they discover the frozen pilot. All hell breaks loose when they take him back to their station and he is accidentally thawed out!

The plot synopsis from Carpenter's 82 "The Thing":
An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realises that an alien life-form with the ability to take over other bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

Yeah but I was thinking of doing it as a total remake but then write it just enough to fit as a prequel. They cut out the attractive woman in the 80's one. They could have just modernized the effects and had the script basically already written. Change the them from Americans to Norwegians.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

^Gotcha. I am concerned over the use of CGI effects. I wish they could have went back and did it the way Bottin did in the 80's. Shame he retired from creature effects to sell real estate. We all know it's possible to go back old school. David Bowie's son did a fantastic job with his movie "Moon".

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

I'm reading the original book at the moment, should be interesting to see how it compares.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

^Your in for a treat. "Who Goes There" is a great read. I highly reccomend reading it late at night with a cup of your favorite hot tea:)

They tried, they failed. The job went to a larger fx house that rushed into it. There is the major delay, time spent fixing it in CGI and reshoots.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

The tag line should have read -

"Mary Elizabeth Winsted is the warmest place to hide"

CGI or not - I would have been there.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

Maybe this film will get the 1st movie its due that it didn't recieve when it 1st came out it was a great suspense horror film and great effects for its time.

Re: The Thing prequel trailer

Yikes, I saw a trailer for this at least year's NY ComicCon many months ago. Someone mentioned the production had "troubles." Any details?

I'm old school and greatly prefer the Howard Hawks original (an all0-time fav). Don't much care for the JC version, as much as I like Kurt Russell. The last time I saw it I thought it was just a gorefest. Eye of the beholder.

I dunno, can't agree with you there, I like Hawks films and am old school as far as films go but I found the original Thing a little too glib as far as character reactions/dialogue goes. Too many blase' banterings between everyone in relation to enough suspense/terror, etc. As far as the JC version goes, i do agree the part I like least is the over done gore.
