The Science of Sleep - "One Second Time Machine"

This is a long shot, but has anyone else watched Michael Gondry's film, "The Science of Sleep"?

In it, the main character creates something called a "One Second Time Machine," which is seen here:

I've been wanting to build something like this, even just a mock-up, since I watched the movie a couple of years ago. In the film, it all opens up and works (the flash actually goes off when the red button is pushed). I know the flash cube is from an old Polaroid camera, but I don't know what the base is. Can anyone identify the main part of it?

Looks like its made from bent sheet metal which is bolted together.

Loved the scene with the White Stripes " Instinct blues" song. And the horse was cool. I thought the film was ok , nothing great, but Gondry's imagination knows no bounds. I love that guy.

With the switch/button and color coded ring, I wasn't sure if it was something specifically made-up for the film, or if it was originally a found item. You're right though, the more I look at it, the more it looks like it could have been completely scratchbuilt.

Agreed, I love Gondry's ideas, even back to the Foo Fighters music video he did; Eternal Sunshine is one of my favorite movies...
