The Philosopher / Sorcerer's Stone grows up

I was so unhappy with my original philosopher's stone. It was too small (1" x 1.5") and too boxy.

I have been searching and searching for the right stone, and finally I found it (at a new age festival no less), and here's the result:

How do people get that crusty sand texture in places? The one's I've seen looked like it was integral to the cast yet, not sculpted/molded in. Real sand and epoxy brushed into the mold first? Before the clear red resin?

I'm amazed no one's did Jurrasic Park amber chunks like this yet.

I add the details after casting. I use sand with acrylic paint. I mix it up in a little squirt bottle and apply it in dabs. It does a good job of covering up and unseemly seams (hehe).

Pretty!

Best be careful with that though.. never when You Know Who might come looking for it. :)

Ha! I know He-who-must-not-be-named pretty well, and I think my crusty bits of resin are safe! :lol

How goes your HP book?

Ok, very odd... I can see the first image but can't see your new version! I REALLY hate the filters here at work.... must be because of where the images are being hosted.

So in the end did any of those pics I sent ya ages ago help with this??

They were definitely useful :), but I got that high-res collection of prop photos and that was probably the most helpful.

At the moment, I'm really just working on doing the letter (the envelope is only what's seen on screen) Dumbledore provides Hagrid with to give the head goblin.

Lovely work! The textures are wonderful, so natural-looking. I assume by "the right stone," you mean that this one looks more like the original? I haven't seen the movie in ages, care to share a screenshot?
