Re: Neewbie needs help scaling

First off, it's difficult to read a post when there's absolutely no punctuation. There's a reason they made punctuation so please use it so people can actually understand what you're trying to say.

Second, have you checked over at the 405th or theDentedHelmet? Those are the respective Halo and Boba Fett costuming sites. I'm fairly certain both sites have threads that deal specifically with scaling issues. I've poked around more on the 405th so I went ahead and linked to the specific thread (see above) on scaling but you'll have to do some searching yourself for the information.

Re: Neewbie needs help scaling

Everyone pretty much uses the standard sizes for both. Unless of course you are to tall or so wide, the armor is very forgiving. Strapping and harnessing it is the key.

Is it possible to convert the pdo files into obj? To be entirely honest, I haven't read every page of this thread, but I haven't seen reference of how to do it. I assume there might be a way.

There are several 3d printers scattered through the company I work for, I thought I'd attempt to convert parts of robo3687's ironman mkVI model to OBJs and talk with the guy that runs the machines.

Pepakura Designer will export .pdo as .obj but I do not think it is available in the locked version.

It's not available in the locked version and it's only able to be done with Pep Designer 3. If you do get a unlocked PD3, so you can convert the PDO to OBJ make sure it's Ok with the original maker if you can find out who it is, otherwise they might have a problem with it if you don't check with them first.

I solved this by changing the line setting under the print settings from Vector to Bitmap (I believe). I'm going off memory here, but basically the finer, smoother option made the lines print faintly or not at all, even with thickness set to 10. As soon as I switched to the other option I could set the thickness to 3 and still get a nice line.
This post saved my sanity and my eyesight.

I am looking into the feasibility of using sintra (PVC foamboard) with pepakura. I know that I’ll have to mod some of the pep pieces slightly to compensate for the thickness as compared to cardstock, but it will mean not having to deal with fiberglass.

I have worked with sintra doing Mandalorian armor and sliced weapons before, but that was 3mm. The 1mm and 2mm sintra is easier to work with and can be scored to create the proper lines for use with the various pep models. Here is my plan and I would like some assistance with whether or not this would work.

First, I will be using 2mm sintra for the majority of the project. It can be heat-curved well enough with a heatgun that I shouldn’t have a problem with that regard. Second, it is strong enough to be scored and bent for angles. The 1mm sintra will be used as the tabs behind it to connect it together. The 1mm can be glued using CA glue to the backs of the various pieces and heat-curved to attach easily to the other. Finally, as it is being built, I will use bondo to reinforce it from behind. After that, I need only sand it (inside and out) give it a couple of coats of primer (inside and out) and then call it good (besides painting it on the outside).

Does this sound like a feasible plan? Using sintra to build pep items?

I use Pepakura for 1mm, 2mm, 3mm and 6mm EVA foam, so I see no reason why you could not use it for sintra. Like you said, you would have to mod the pepakura to deal with the attributes of sintra.

I do not think you could get away with gluing sintra edges together like you can with foam, so depending on what you are building, in some cases it may be simpler to draw templates for the sintra instead of using a pep file for large, continuous pieces. The other thing you could probably do(I do not have a lot of experience working with plastic, so this is just me imagining working with it) is connect two parts together with a backing strip of sintra and then filling any gaps during your finish/paint process. I am assuming sintra is glued with plastic cement.

Hello all. Great site and AWESOME work by everyone. Yup another new fella here. So I downloaded the Pep viewer 3. Now I need some guidance as to where to locate files, and import them? Ive read the blog here, and I must admit Im probably doing it wrong. To help Im looking to try my hand at a War Machine helmet. Any help would be greatly appreciative.
Itll be way late tonight before Ill be able to respond to anything, but I will respond.
Thanks!

Thanks, I realized that last night. I decided to just bite the bullet and lay down the cash for the full version. I converted the helmet, made a few of my own edits, gave it some thickness, cut it into some more manageable pieces and sent it off to the guys that run the rapid prototyping machines at work for a quote. I know the material costs are low, I'm just hoping their labor charge is as well. We've been trying to come up a promotional campaign within the company to advertise the existence of these machines. Maybe I can be the ad!

If things look good, I'll make a thread with the progress and if it works out alright, i'll upload my converted files. If it looks good and it's cheap enough, maybe I'll print the whole suit!

Should have just contacted me I get codes from Tamasoft for free, because of the pepakura panels I do at conventions and could have given you a code.

Question about using Resin and Fiberglass...

How hard/firm should the dried piece be?

I'm in the process of making a helmet and I'm not sure if I've applied the correct amount of Resin/fiberglass etc.

I've just completed putting resin on the outside and fiberglass cloth+resin on the inside of the helmet. The helmet is firm but it is still flexible. I wasnt sure if it was supposed to be really hard or still somewhat flexible.

I'm debating on adding another coat of resin.

with only resin it's much stiffer than paper alone but still pretty flexible. once you start adding a layer or 2 (maybe more) of fiberglass cloth and/or mat it'll become very solid.
