The People vs. George Lucas

how bad are the prequels...

they're so bad that 10 years later, people are still talking about how bad they are

Oh god I never realized it's been over 10 years since the PT started. Wow. I feel old. Also, yes, beating a dead horse. We got the originals on the second discs and that's good enough for me.

Why do people hate the prequels so much? Remember how much better music was when you were younger? Same thing. It's mostly nostalgia.

While the PT may not reach the heights of the OT, ROTJ is still the worst of the saga. Want the OT on DVD? You already got it, and that's all you're gonna get. Get over it.

To paraphrase Larry the Cable Guy, didn't someone already do an "all corrected up" (edited out "special" material, adjusted musical cues, etc) version of ANH and has plans for ESB and ROTJ? Like prop replicas, maybe to get what you really want, you can't rely on official sources.

I agree people make too much fuss about how bad the prequels were, but there's no way Phantom Menace was better than Return of the Jedi.

Oh, you mean those 'laserdisc masters' DVDs that are presented in non-anamorphic widescreen and contain only 2.0 audio? I don't know about you, but I do believe the standard set fourth on DVDs is that when a movie is presented in Widescreen, it should be Anamorphic. And how hard is it to get the 5.1 audio? Movies dating back 20 years before Star Wars get 5.1 treatment. Add insult to injury, they actually labeled the unaltered editions as mere "Bonus Features" instead of, you know? An actual feature.

Just because you say it's out on DVD doesn't mean it's good nor acceptable. Remember how much Lucas always used the THX banner on all his movies that carried the slogan "For Superior Sound and Picture Quality"? This is the absolute opposite of that.

Let it go, man. It isn't going to change a single thing. Fight a fight you can win. This ain't it. Do you people expect Lucas to just stand there with tears in his eyes and say "Oh my God, you geeky non-filmmakers were so right. I ruined everything! I will do a reboot!"?

That's exactly what I meant. It IS the original trilogy as it was originally presented. Did you see a 70mm print the OT with quintaphonic sound? Dolby Stereo? Mono? Was it a pristine print or had it been through the projector a few thousand times?

If you want the original trilogy the way you want it, you and everyone like you has to get together, hunt down 70mm prints with discrete quintaphonic optical soundtracks, restore and remaster them. How hard would that be?

The simple fact is it just isn't going to happen. The laserdisc versions were just thrown in to placate those that wanted the non-SE original trilogy on DVD, that's exactly what you got, and nothing more. Will they appear in a super duper ultra mega deluxe Blu-Ray box set? Don't hold your breath!

Sure, Jedi was a great movie, as long as you throw out everything except the bits between Luke and Vader. Everything else was mediocre or worse. Trust me.

Yeah, I'm feeling the years too...

And again, of course, I really don't consider myself a "hater" even though I'm definitely not a prequel trilogy fan. It would be nice though if they'd at least release the original ANH (minus the "ANH") in HD either via iTunes or BluRay or something...

Of course, I'd *like* to see it cleaned up and restored properly but I at least want an HD version and I don't think that's unreasonable.

I really can't imagine how or why any fan of Star Wars would NOT want the same thing even just to preserve the original film in it's original form. I don't see "haters" or the prequel trilogy or anything else really having anything to do with that point of the argument. Whether we ever get it or not, who knows, but it seems to me something every Star Wars fan would want...

No it's not. The original print did not have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen that had to be squared up or zoomed in to fit the rectangular shape of the theater.

We're not asking for the world here Tan. We're just asking for Lucas to present the unaltered versions in the same way every film including the ones in his library have been presented for over a decade. Nothing demanding about it, just make it worth the money we spend on it. Spending money on a product that was deliberately made to be inferior is not money well spent.

Yeah, that's about it. I mean, you can say all you want about how "you're looking at the OT with rose colored glasses, they were just as bad, etc etc etc." Bull. If they were just as bad, nobody would have loved them and nobody would care about poor sequels.

And yes, not giving us a quality presentation of the OOT on DVD/BluRay is shameful. Lucas has comitted a crime against cinema in supressing the Original Original Trilogy. It's a piece film history, and a significant one, and ought to be given the attention and care it deserves.

Simply another talentless clown who spends his time tearing down rather that making something of actual value. Pathetic really.

For me it is not that I hate* but that I have seen that Lucas can write a good story and make a good movie and I was disapointed that with all the time and money and technology he had the movies did not turn out better.

* I really don't hate any movies, the only movie I have ever turned off in the middle was "Waking LIfe" and my Netflix scores trend a lot higher than average. Wait, there is one, I may be a philistine but, EraserHead is the worst movie I have ever seen. Watching it was a BRUTAL obligation to my movie library.

Marcia Lucas was and still is the man.

Ya know when George joked he'd fix it in post?

I saw ESB opening day at The Uptown in DC. The TIE Fighters SCREAMED around the theater, the screen/presentation was 70mm, and it was immersive.

And I believe a properly restored un-tinkered-with OT would be LAUDED by all of those my age that still chase that high. And there are a LOT of us. I guarantee it would outsell any Star Wars OT dvd that came before it.
