"The Orville". A Seth McFarlane Space Adventure on Fox

shoot, they've even set up the initial ideas of "How the hell can we stay allied with Maklus?", which I expect is something we'll see come to at least some sort of larger head at some point.

Which would again be a really good storyline to explore. I just want to see these things go somewhere meaningful. If Orville wants to remain successful and competitive in the modern television market, they have to follow at least some of the conventions of modern television. Otherwise, it'll wind up cancelled. Individuality doesn't matter much when you're no longer on the air.

I think they will go somewhere meaningful, 'The Orville' has already demonstrated how they can scatter around things in earlier episodes which will come back in later ones with more significance.
I am happy with the way they are pacing things out- we are getting to know their universe and it's people as the stories unfold.

The farther they stay away from the melodramatic long-form serial model of modern television the better, I say.
It's what sets them apart. They're different. The Orville's a breath of fresh air.
It reminds me of when The Ramones came along and reminded us all what rock'n'roll was supposed to be,
and we all went "oh, yah..."

I disagree on The Orville needing season or series long arcs, it gives the show much more flexibility since TV Hollywood still has a problem with serial television not based on a novel series. As it stands, network television is not set up for serial television series, esp. highly serial shows that basically have planned obsolesence built into them like Game of Thrones or The Expanse. Networks want shows that they can run until the ratings aren't there or the show just gets too expensive to produce. Both of which are not particularly conducive to a serial show since you don't know how long you have to keep your story going for and are suseptible to having your show canceled before you have a chance to wrap it up, like what happened to Farscape. Or you're not sure if you're getting renewed for the next season and wrap things up earlier than planned only to get renewed on another network ala B5. Then there's the risk of pulling a Lost where you have a show that's clearly meant to go somewhere but you don't know how long you have to get there so you end up dragging things out and answering questions with questions just to keep the show going.

Of course you can argue shows like The Expanse and Game of Thrones but both are cable/streaming shows so the normal network rules really don't apply to them. Plus both are based on book series so the producers know exactly where they're going with their shows, it just becomes a matter of how long they want to take getting there. You could compare them to the Marvel shows on Netflix but they're Netflix shows and Netflix being a streaming service does things differently than the networks and with the Marvel shows there's a wealth of comic book arcs that they can borrow from.

The ideal syndication model was for a series to be seven years in duration and have interchangeable episodes so it is not critical to follow them in order. This was the way the studios could maximize profits and get the most out of a show- ST-TNG was setup that way.
Things have changed over the years and that no longer holds true like it did.

I think MASH was the first show to have carry overs between episodes but still had the shows stand alones. Hawkeyes tent accumulated memorabilia from earlier times and Colonel Potters tent had all of the paintings you saw him working on before. Hot Lips's marriage and divorce was the biggest arc

How many Union ships have we seen? Is the "loopy" engines a standard thing, like how most Federation ships have the nacelles?

From what I remember we have seen three different classes of Union ships- one larger and one smaller (with two engine loops). There might be more in the background in the space station shots but the ones I mentioned were showing these ships flying side by side with the Orville in different episodes.

The engine loops seems to be how the Earth Tech equips with the Quantum Drive- just like Trek the shuttles have a small version of it as well. Other races have different drive technologies but a lot of them have some sort of spikes trailing (Krill) or a rear enclosed area with tech around it (Molcan)

It's funny how The Orville is more Trek than Discovery. They seem to have abandoned being a parody and have become a light-hearted space opera. Which WORKS!

This.

Just managed to get the DVD of the first series to watch in the UK and it was like welcoming an old friend back. I laughed out loud to more scenes in this than your average comedy. It was mostly great, uncomplicated entertainment and Seths love of ST and sci fi in general ( if you hadn't pick it up from "Family Guy" already) just overflows in it. The way he brings you in on the jokes is wonderfully nostalgic. Total won me over as a series!!!

That episode was freakin amazing! This two parter is gonna be up there with Best of Both Worlds for me!

And what a payoff to that robot romance. Way to rip the rug out from under the whole crew!

And the music was fantastic. Sounded like throwbacks to Alien, Motion Picture, TWOK.. it was just beautiful.

WOW! What an episode!
I can’t help but think this is what Seth McFarlane has been wanting to do his entire career!

This is Damn good Sci Fi. Period

They've talked about the Krill war, we've seen them once or twice, but why not expand that into something ongoing? You can still have the stand-alone episodes, but you'll still be moving the overall story in some direction.

We still have 4 more episodes to go...
\
Also peeking ahead at some of the episode descriptions, we WILL see the Krill again soon
