The official Munson R2 build up thread

I'm sure the lil' feller doesn't feel too confident running around with his backside showing, but poppa wants to show off all of his hard work. This was taken after two days of solid work in the new workshop. Prior to that, it was just a box of parts...

EDIT:
For those of you coming to the party late, I've started a blog where I am now keeping all of the updates and pictures. Here's the link:

Not only is his backside showing but, he is missing his skirt as well.

Man that had to be a first time thrill.

I have the wheelchair motors, computer controller, the R2, the rotation dome gear and have done squat. Congrats.

Yeah, my favorite part is where I almost ran him into the wall.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. It's coming together really nicely.

here's a pic of the shop where I'm working:

It's a huge help having all the tools that I would ever need at my fingertips.

now thats a workshop, I got a drillpress, beltsander, grinder and bandsaw, but I seen a few items that I wish I had the room for. very nice setup and room to spare.

Well done, I'm envious. :angry

I need to get a few tools soon for my workshop. I really need a drill press. I think I'll go get one tomorrow.

What's the name of that little yellow and black robot by the corner of the worktable in the pic?

:p

That's awesome.

Seeing your shop pic though, I started thinking someone ought to cram that stuff into a R/C Shopvac just for kicks. :lol

Don't think that shop vacs resemblance to a droid has gone unnoticed. I think I saw R2 glancing amorously at it just yesterday, but that could have been my imagination..

I think the only thing the shop is missing that I could use is a disk sander. Or whatever it's called. Belt sander? You know what i mean. I picked up a random/rotory sander just the other day to fill the gap, and it's doing fine.

And yeah, i'm still terrified every time I use the mill or lathe. But maybe it's that terror that will allow me to keep all my fingers in tact :) Either way, I just love working there. Great people in the building too, many of them star wars fans. A group of folks totally freaked out the other night when I was taking him for a test drive. It was great. Even unfinished, R2 is still making friends for me...

Here's the other corner of the shop. This is the dedicated R2 corner. anything that I need to sit at a desk to do, I do in here. Soldering, small sanding, plotting the demise of the empire... stuff like that.

Sure. She features industrial strength suction and isn't averse to the restraining bolt now and then. What's not to like? :love

But seriously, Matt, beautiful workshop and beautiful R2-in-progress. I envy you. :love

Thanks again for all the kind words guys. it's a blast.

Today I got a bunch of resin parts primered. Did a little clean up on them where it probably wasn't needed. you know, sides of the parts that arent going to see the light of day and all that. had to drill out some stuff, but that was easy..

I spoke with a friend of mine who has a TOTALLY wild hobby: he is building his first airplane. Turns out, there's just as many DIY airplane builders (if not more) than R2 builders. Anyhow, in my conversation with him, he asked how much of R2 was done. i told him that i've accomplished a ton, but the devil is in the details. He then told me of an expression which comes from his hobby: 90% complete, 90% remaining.

made me laugh, and made me realize how similar our hobbies are.

You need to install a little WiFi vid-cam inside him. Then you could navigate without actually being in line-of-sight. Get really pimp and add full 360 distance sensors. Could run it all off a small laptop somewhere in his innards.

p.s. Looks Fantastic.
