The Official Color & Size of YODA Eyes Thread

VERY nice artwork Phil.

I'd say "B" for sure. :)

Also, I just want to say that it's kind of cool that you're using a photo of your OWN eye as the basis for the eyes that will be installed on the finished puppet. Kind of similar to Stuart Freeborn using elements of his own physical features to influence the look of the film puppet. You've put your own little trademark in there.

One iris is warmer than the other but I think this is going to come down to taste.
[/b]

Like you said they are both valid choices based on what reference I've seen. It's entirely down to what will make you happier. If I had to choose for myself I would go with option A.

Cheers,

I have to say though that these eyes are as they would look under bright sunlight.. With normal lighting conditions and the over hanging eyelids they will look darker.

I'm going to decide on Friday which to go with and email the hero image to Cantor + Nissel.

Cyb :)

Heres a taster for what Cantor + Nissel can do...(The surface finishing is lot better but these two have become scratched over time) I remember now all these years later having spoken to Lesley Ripley (but she didn't say she was the one... more like we did it) about the Yoda eyes and she made me a set from memory but as you can see from the image the white area is to red looking and the iris is to small.

Anyway, this time we have better reference pictures to reminder her but still... not a bad attempt after 20 odd years.

Cyb.

Great work Cyb.

Both of your two latest designs look fantastic, B possibly has the edge in my opinion, but both look very nice.

Jeremy

id go for B tho both look good i think the origional has a less defined dark ring round it so B it would be tho i prefer the greens brown flecks of A

personal choice tho like everyones saying

That looks amazing, Cyb. :eek

Between A & B which is your personal choice?

I think if we saw the original Yoda under good lighting conditions we might see something like "A". On the other hand, the pic with Freeborn is telling us they should look more like "B". Thinking about the Yoda I want to see... I'd like him to appear as he did in the film, so I choose "A". At the same time, I REALLY like "B". Heck, I like both colors you've created. Now I sound like Vizzini from Princess Bride deciding which goblet to drink from.

It appears Lesley chose to go with a more brown/olive green color (from memory).

Whatever you decide is fine with me. :thumbsup

I like B as well. Looking good. One thing that I also notice is that the outer edge of the iris looks more of a dark green than black on the blown up Freeborn pic. It doesn't appear as dark as the pupil which is why I am coming to this conclusion. Any one else see that or am I seeing things?? Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

The color in that shot is so out of whack.
Yoda's skin is practically yellow. Once you correct the color of the skin to be more green like the film puppet, most of the brown/gold tones in the eye disappear.
The screen cap from ESB is by far the best color ref we have to go by.
[/b]
After thinking about it Gino, I wanted to see what would happen if I changed Yoda's skin from yellow to green in Tom's photo. And not just any green but green like how he was in ESB. You're right, the brown/gold coloring practically disappears. As you can see, the brown is still there, but not so distinct.

Nice job.
I think there were a couple of options that Cyb already put up that match that photoshop corrected pic pretty well.

Heres the plan of attack..

I'm doing to send the hi-res image of B to Cantor+NIssel today and get them to do me a set of eyes to see how they turn out. If satisfied with them I'll go ahead and get more made.

Cheers

Cyb.

This is an incredible job Cyberman. I can't wait to see what C&N does with your artwork. I'd be happy with either of these final versions.

One more obsessive question about color- does it seem to anyone else that the screen caps from the Dagobah swamp all have a blue tint, like all of those shots were taken with a blue filter on the camera or filtered in post production? (See the cap above from Cyberman's other thread on his completed Yoda.) I seem to remember that in the behind the scenes video and photos of Oz with the puppet, the colors of everything were more warm. And if that is the case, it may raise the typical question- is the objective to match what is on the screen or rather to match the color of the puppet you would have seen first hand if you had been there on set/in Freeborn's shop? If the latter, other than Wampa's photos, are there any photos of the puppet behind the scenes that would give us an accurate idea of the color of the puppet and therefore the corresponding color correction for the iris color in Wampa's photos? Just wondering.

Well you could be right belloq.

Right anyway, I've placed an order with C+N for my first set of eyes... they are the "B" design with 15mm diameter iris'... I should have them this time next week... maybe earlier :D

Cyb.

cool, hope they turn out well. perhaps make a post to see who all will want them? might help with ure nagotiations, with c+n.

im for a set anyway

C+N are asking for pupil size :unsure

4mm 5mm 6mm???

Cyb.
[/b]

I'm thinking 6.5mm.

I come to this figure by copying the pupil in the image Wampa posted as the iris is just a bit bigger than 2 pupils.

EDIT - I'm now thinking 6.5mm is way too large as we are dealing with measuring from the center point. Effectively since you ordered 15mm irises there is only 7.5mm from center to play with. So now I'm thinking inorder to fit another pupil into that 7.5mm space the pupil would have to be 4mm??
