The Nautilus second coming

Kind of a kit bash build.

Someone on eBay had a Nautilus for sale who knew nothing about the boat. The seller had a model that was missing both the wheelhouse and arch raker. He took the pics with the boat upside down. Silly as it may seem, there was merit to this design.

Assuming Nemo and crew survived, this is what I think he may have come up with for the second coming of the Nautilus....

This is step one: adding additional rakers to the top of the wheelhouse and removing the spotlights to be repositioned on the deck. The Nautilus' destructive power lies totally with the raker.

beautiful ship, have you made any progress on it?
I'm working on a paper model of the Nautilus and having a lot of fun.

Have made progress but this is a concept build; two steps forward, on step back. Am just about finished with the changes on the upper hull.
I cut down the overall height of the wheel house and added port and starboard rear facing potholes. Scrapped that idea and just added a one man view port which seems design-wise to be more in line with the Nautilus' original elements.
There will be lots of down lighting on the lower hull.

Very interesting design you have here ;)

Made some progress.q
Cutting down the size of the wheelhouse entailed altering the arch raker quite bit more than I anticipated. Added dive lights on the lower hull and a new spear-shaped ram. Removed the dorsal raker as I don't feel it's needed.
Now working on the salon window and surround spots which will be conventional.

Am close to done. Will let the boat rest awhile before weathering and rusting.

Hello Mr Vismus,
I thought that you may like to see a couple of pics of my own scratchbuilt Nautilus she is six feet long and was on show at TRANSPORT MODELS IN PRESTON LANCASHIRE before being bought by a private collector. all hand made with the exception of the glass windows. She took around ten months to build and has a bout 3,000 hand sliced rivets on her hull.

regards Barrie ( the old guy ) If I can help with your build at all let me know.

Barry:
Truely a supreme effort! A six footer and scratch built: far beyond my scope!
Believe I've seen at least two of your pictures before on the nautilussubmarine.com site. Hope you have lots of pictures of your work. I've built a good number of Nautili (two reside with a collector in the UK) and I have pictures and fond memories of the work.
Will be building a Brodeen 48" Nautlus later this year.
Best regards,
Tommie

Barrie, wow, is there anything you haven't built? That's a gorgeous Nautilus! Vismus, looking forward to your painting and weathering! One question, guys, the brass hero model - was it painted before for the movie and just scrubbed/stripped to bare metal afterwards? I plan on building a 1/48. That, as they say, will be the day : ) But if I do build one I'm thinking of giving her a weathered brass paintjob.

C-Jazz:
One of the fellow members of nautilussubmarine.com was on the restoration team of the movie prop called the hero.
Quite sure he stated the hull was painted a number of times for the movie. Then again, the hero was only used for underwater scenes so that makes it difficult to know how she was finished.

Another composite done by a friend, Wayne on NS.com.
Am so pleased with his work.

Very nice build! I really like the changes you made, including lowering the wheelhouse. The photoshop images really confirm that your design fits among the Nautilus sub designs.

Thank you, kind sir and sirs:
This build has put me on the launch pad for another version/variation. Have a number of new ideas.

Tommie

I've started the Nautilus IV. (I'm more than a bit obsessed...)

Will start a new thread with pictures once enough progress is made but here's what is different:

The wheelhouse is smaller and even lower than the N3.
The entire wheelhouse profile including the breathers, is much closer to the deck.
The rear view is a dome similar the the wheelhouse windows and sit above the rear hatch bay.
The forward gator spots are to be repositioned.
New interior and exterior lighting scheme.

Here's one VERY rough picture.

Fantastic build!

I have been wanting to buy a model kit of the Nautilus. Do you know what is the best available one around the 30" size?
