The Mandalorian - Camtono

Wow this is an awesome project off to a stellar start! Will be watching for sure!

Thanks for the kind words!

Small update:

Reworking the cylinder walls, and focusing attention on the inside of the Camtono:

As you can see the walls are actually quite thin, and each of the three 'legs' are shaped kind of like extruded I-Beams. with details between. I'm working on carving those shapes out of the solid bodies I already have.

More to follow soon.

That one is the kind you can buy today, and is the type my rough model is based on. However, if you look at the sort of horizontal bars on either side of the motor, they curve upwards slightly. The prop from the TV show has angled but straight handles rather than curved.

What I don't know is whether 1970s ice cream makers of this type had the straight angled handles, and thus the TV show prop is modelled after that. Or if the propmakers for the Mandalorian just took the general idea of an ice cream maker, and made their own thing.

Here's the best reference shot I could find of the top in frame to illustrate:

Another small update on the Camtono. I've roughed in the details of the I-Beam 'legs' and modified some of the interior of the can:

Getting the angles to match up was especially challenging, and there's still a long way to go to make those legs accurate but it's looking better. Digging out the trenches in the angled portions of the bottom piece is also going to be somewhat challenging, but I'm having a lot of fun putting this puzzle together.

More to follow.

Pretty sure the rocker switches are wider on on the real thing, too.

(Is anyone else annoyed that they didn't have this thing open from the top? The crossbar looks like a pair of latches to me and it doesn't feel right that they don't do anything.)

Thanks for all the feedback! I've made some adjustments based on these, still need to add the solid bits under the top arms, but the switch-panel details should be better now:

Rockers are now quite a bit wider, added the slot below the rockers, fixed the 'plate' that the rockers attach to, adjusted the vents as well as the status light... thing?

Nice. I also think the real switches have a less pronounced curve to them than yours do. They're probably off the shelf parts, and I found a model on Amazon that looks pretty close (aside from the color):

I don't think the panel is raised. I think there's a countersunk area, like you originally had, and they dropped the black panel into it. So it's close to flush, but there's a sort of bevelled seam around it.

Yeah honestly I can probably clean the rocker switches up later, but they’ll likely just be placeholders for real off the shelf ones like you’ve found.

Darn. I was on the fence about that, but I think you’re right. It’s tough to tell being so dark, but not a big deal to undo.

Good looking out!

Exactly. I guess the original icecream maker was looking like the prop of the show but the company just dont produce that model anymore. But to be sure we will wait for the making of lol

Perhaps import the 3D model for an actual rocker switch rather than try to model them from scratch. (Or just use the actual switches) It looks like they used this model. Perhaps with some paint for aging the while. C&K's website doesn't have a CAD model for that specific part, but they do for other parts in the same series.

Excellent idea. McMaster usually has downloadable 3D model files for all or most of their products. I used some of their set-screws on my CryoCan. Honestly it's too bad they don't have the 3D models on DigiKey for that one. Something like this one would probably do but I don't think it's quite right, yours is much closer:

Since you need only the top, the 3D model of any other one in the same series would work. They are available on the C&K webpage, you select a switch, and hit the little box shaped icon to get the model. (Registration required). But the edges and curve of the C&K switch is closest to the photo. The others all have a extra chamfer on the sides, and a wider bezel. Also as a product designer, McMaster is my #1 visited webpage, and if they ever stop providing great 3D models I might as well quit.
