The Legend of Tarzan (Post-release)

Re: The Legend of Tarzan - Official Teaser Trailer

"John Carter of Skull Island"

I think it looks like it could be very good though...

That's a perfect description.

As for good or bad, I dunno. Could go either way. Trailers are so unrelated to how the final movie is these days.

Tarzan, Legend of the Ape Man was one of the original dark/gritty stories...

I know the original ERB stuff was darker/grittier than most of the Tarzan stuff we have grown up with.

But the original Little Mermaid story was pretty bleak too - that doesn't prove it is the best way to do that story. Sometimes the original take on a story isn't the best one after all. Or at least the later take becomes equally valid.

I guess I'm just so tired of dark/gritty reboots that I could puke. It's getting to the point where it turns me off even when it's justified by the source material.

Eh, I've always been a fan of the original stories because they are what the author initially envisioned. Don't get me wrong, Disney and some others can reimagine classic stories like no tomorrow and do it well (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Starship Troopers, 1953's War of the Worlds, Greystoke), but there's also instances where they really screw the pooch (John Carter, Disney's Tarzan, Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds, Keanu Reeve's The Day the Earth Stood Still, 2001's Planet of the Apes, Nic Cage's The Wicker Man (NOT THE BEES!!!!), Disney's Treasure Planet). I guess it really has to do with how invested in the film the cast and crew are.

Much of the time the original stories don't need to be changed; Burroughs' Tarzan novels, in this case. But, sure enough, someone comes along and thinks, "Well, I liked it, but I can do better," and then they make a movie and prove that they can't. And, of course there are the studio heads who simply want a watered-down version of the original stories so they can sell more tickets to kids and families who don't want to watch movies with violence, language, and/or nudity. And there's nothing wrong with that, but they should just create new characters and stories instead of creating disappointing stories with known characters.

Hum, hum, it is more Spider-man in the jungle...

Cut Tarzan a little slack, he was swinging through the trees a long time before the webslinger.
Certainly an early action hero, even some basis for superheroes, given his unusual origins needed to explain
his abilities.

Re: The Legend of Tarzan - Official Teaser Trailer

I agree with you CessnaDriver, I was just saying about tarzan's swings. They are.... too much... even for a monkey man.

Re: The Legend of Tarzan - Official Teaser Trailer

Yeah, I hear ya. I guess they feel they needed to punch it up for the kids to pay attention.

Re: The Legend of Tarzan - Official Teaser Trailer

I grew up watching the old Tarzan, Lone Ranger and Superman TV shows on Saturday morning with my dad. Now my 2 year old daughter love's Disney's Tarzan. Does this movie look like it has promise? Yes. But what I hate is that I can't share with her what I had with my dad over some of these iconic characters.

And Tarzan using vines to swing from place to place is only in the movies and television shows anyway. In the novels Burroughs never gave a detailed explanation of how Tarzan moved through the trees, only that he used the upper canopies of the trees because it was faster than forcing his way through the thick vegetation on the ground.

Yikes....bad CGI showcasing an over the top scene "just cause".

Yup, it's definitely 2015.

People were making comments like that in the early CGI era 20 years ago.

It's just blockbuster filmmaking in general.

Re: The Legend of Tarzan

Cool. Got a picking up after Greystoke vibe despite the origins retelling.

Tarzan really has never caught on with audiences after the popularity of the movies in the 1930s and 40s starring Johnny Weissmuller, so it seems they have to remind every subsequent generation of how he came to be who he is. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but for those of us who are already familiar with the character it means we have to sit through 30-60 minutes of origin story every time Hollywood decides to give Tarzan another go.

I think this trailer is better than the first so I'm still cautiously optimistic that this might be a good movie, but it's probably not "flashy" enough for modern audiences.

Went and saw this one today. Wife, myself and adult son all really enjoyed it. Thought it was really well done overall. The story was solid and the retelling of the origin, was just the right length. Despite what some may think, the animals were well done and fairly flawless 90% of the time. I'll put it like this, the CG never took me out of the moment, if you know what I mean. Now I need to watch Greystoke again, it's been a really long time since I've seen it and I'd like to compare.

I'm sure there's some appeal (there's always something for someone), and a lot of money was spent, but what's the point?
