This is the result of a collaboration with another member, who wanted to use Shapeways to make a 3D-printed Oz key. I had already built a 3D model some time ago, so I offered to help out.
One of the materials now offered by Shapeways is stainless steel. You do get this slightly textured surface, but since this was meant to be an old key it didn't matter.
One of the nice things about the process was that even though we live in different countries, I was able to upload my first model, he ordered a plastic version as a 'proof', asked me to make some changes, I re-uploaded, and he ordered the final key in metal.
It still amazes me that I could sit and 'build' something on my computer, and a couple of weeks later he's holding it in his hand thousands of miles away. I'm telling you, it's the future! :cool
