Oh, and I got to meet the FX guy who created Molasar for the film. It was Nick Maley, the same guy who helped create Yoda. he has a studio on the island of St Thomas. Great guy, who spoke about SW and stuff for half an hour.

I was one of the dozen or so people who saw The Keep in the theater back in '83 (I helped support a lot of flops in the '80's). It's a mess of a movie on so many levels but I still like it. I love the mood created by the mix of cinematography and the music by Tangerine Dream. The oppressive doom filled atmosphere is right down my alley.

The Keep is one of the movies I would love to see restored to the directors original vision with all the footage that ended up on the cutting room floor added back in. I know Michael Mann has pretty much disowned the movie for various reasons so I doubt we will ever see it.

I read the book before the movie and this was my face.

In the book, the crosses all over the walls and the beastie within are all supposed to be the origins of the vampire myth. Nothing was mentioned about having a Darkseid clone camped in Transylvania. :facepalm

The movie itself left me feeling very disappointed.

This thread got me curious, (nazis and the occult are a good mix of creepy) so I fired up the netflix and here is my opinion. I have to agree with the overall sentiment that the movie is pretty flawed, but there are some really great shots in it. Is it for everybody? definitely not. If you are into 80's film, it's a guilty pleasure. The soundtrack, Mann's cameras perpetually in slo-mo, matte paintings for backgrounds, unexplained plot devices (i.e., the glowing eyes thing), the artsy sex scene that makes me wonder if anyone involved in its creation has ever had sex with another human being before....I could go on. Anyway. I enjoyed it (as best I could) by viewing it as what it was: a clunky film version of what was probably a good book, and an 80's film time capsule.
