Point me in the right direction Scott.

GET PAID ???? If people at the cons knew how much money and time I have put into my elder suit..... I DO sell some parts from time to time.... but any money I get goes right back into materials to try new techniques, more sculpting materials, painting supplies, etc....


For me personally, this is a hobby not a business and anyone who thinks there is some huge influx of profit is just wrong. I spend 100s of hours doing this stuff for the satisfaction of seeing a final piece. If I could even calculate the labor, materials, shop costs???? profits??? please. Can you say deficit???

Regarding the sell of those parts from time to time: I make EVERY effort to not only meet but exceed any expectation someone might have. If at anytime someone has a problem, I do whatever it takes to fix the problem. I turn around orders as fast as possible with a quality I would expect when I open a box of goodies I receive.

If there are folks that don't like the idea of having to pay for something as unique as these costumes then - - friggin make them yourselves. As of a year ago I hadn't touched clay since I was 5 years old. I had NEVER used an airbrush, and I had no clue how to build molds, or that you could even buy materials used in hollywood.

If this sounds like a rant??? GOOD. The attitude of people sometimes really pisses me off.

Well said; here is my 2c about it:

This is directed toward those who are questioning whether we build our own stuff & whether we get paid to go to the con....
I would like to set their heads on straight!

Look through the Work In Progress threads and see the scratch built suits and the time and effort it takes.

For example, my 2008 SDCC costume is ENTIRELY hand made, from pattern making to the final leather dyeing.
The exception to the hand-made-from-patterns are the sandals, netting, and hair; those I bought.
I didn't sew the bodysuit skin, but I did paint every bit of it.
That build took the better part of a YEAR.

As far as getting PAID...
Like Elder-One said, I do it for a hobby, for the creativity, & making things come to life.... NOT for money.
What I get for what I build & sell (countdown electronics) only covers the parts and shipping, there is no huge profit being made! The expense of the software and interface hardware required to develop the product was NOT passed on to the customer!

I don't get paid to go to cons, I pay my own way; con tickets, hotel, airfare/gas, the works.

Look in the SDCC and DragonCon threads and see if there is ANY mention of any perks, you will see that there is ample mention of "get your hotel room NOW, don't wait, or you will be SOL and have to wait till next year".

Just to clarify...no one here is the one saying it (that I know of) its just youtube people. Most people here know what all is involved in this hobby. Maybe I am being overly aggressive about it but, I myself know how much work goes into this hobby and how much it costs to go to a Con and for someone without any info or knowledge on the subject to run his head and cheapen it all, pisses me off just a tad bit.

Well in defense of the people on YouTube.... wait... there isn't one. There are so many people on YouTube that it’s a wonder you can find anything.

I have people asking me to do a tutorial on my gauntlet and the first thing the video says is: READ THE DISCRIPTION. I give a link to my very detailed thread of how I made it.

I think it’s just people not wanting to read and simply not giving any effort to find out things (where have we seen that?). Not everyone, just the loud ones.

Just because you don't have the skill doesn't mean someone else doesn't. I just shake my head and delete the stupid comments. I have my videos set either to 'no comments' or 'by approval'.



These videos clearly have had a possitive influence on the community. If a few people refuse to believe that there are fans that dedicate many, many hours into something then so be it. You can't please everyone.

Yea, I agree with what Bryan said: jealous. They're just basic hatters. And you're right by not dropping to their level. Kuddos for not dropping!

I've never made a suit yet, but from what I read here-you guys put loads of hours, dollars, and heart into your suits and don't have to answer to anyone about them.

I saw a few of those comments too. And I will admit, when I saw my first pred costume vid on youtube, I did think that it was bought, but I took the time to read what was there, and saw the uploader telling another commenter that they made the suit, and I was amazed. I think that led me on to the comic con vids, and from there, to this site, which I am over the moon at finding!!
If I ever see someone who is disbelieving the truth somehwere, I will kindly direct them to this site to shut them up! Count on that!!

Heres the dumb logic behind those people thinking we bought them...Somebody had to make that suit, it didnt materialize out of thin air right? So, why cant we be the ones who made them? Is it so hard to believe that the people you see in them are the ones who made them? You dont know who is in that suit.

Yeah its just jealous ********.....I've gone through similar with my Robocop..F'm they don't understand the passion for these projects and the intense amount of skill and labor required too bring them too life...Not too mention the heat and pain from being in these extreme reproductions for usually longer periods of time then the actors who originally portray these characters...All for the love of it....I was there at the SDCC and loved seeing the work in your Preds...I hope too join the Hunt with you soon.

the more we inform people about "what it takes" the less likely they are to make what we endure seem trivial.

sometimes i feel like i need to tell people look, this took a huge part of my wallet and a major life investment to do this .....other times i feel like why do i need to explain myself to small minded people to begin with..

I hear you Kit. At SDCC this year some ******* thought it would be cute to take a pic in front of me and Jerry flipping the bird in our face. He turned around when the pic was over and I thanked him for being an *******. He mumbled something and I frimly told him to **** off. He left the area pretty quickly. I just dont get why people have to be pricks. I mean, is your life so miserable you have to try and drag others down with you? There was a lot of that **** at Con this year.

I think some people are just born to be pricks, Scott. Nothing you or anybody can really do about it. It sucks that some ******* has to ruin everyone else's time at what is supposed to be fun for everyone. Next time anyone tries that, just get everyone together & walk towards him, Aint nobody gonna **** with 8 or 9 predators coming after them. I have to disagree there. Thats why people act the way they do in society these days. They feel they can do whatever they want with no repercussions thanks to this tolerance and acceptance idealology that is pushed on us. Sorry but, you act like an ******* Im going to check you on it. If more people acted out against improper behaivior and let others know it will not be tolerated, people would think twice about acting like that.

That's why wristblades and spears were invented. They might think twice about acting like jackasses if they knew they could become the prey.

Luckily, I haven't had to deal with anyone really wanting to do damage to my costumes, and I haven't had too much trouble with people acting like buffoons to get a photo op. In fact, one of my most fun costume experiences was when a guy in a gorilla suit challenged me to a fight when I was in the Gamera suit. It wasn't a real fight, of course, but I had fun acting it out. Generally, I really enjoy it when people take photos of my suits.

I do notice, though, that as it gets later at night and people have been drinking, the behavior gets more stupid. One party, Cow Asylum, is infamous for having drunk women getting up on tables or ledges and dancing:

As far as YouTube commenters go, the average intelligence of a YouTube comment is somewhere in the mid-60s, so I don't put much stock in what they have to say.

i've shared some of my war stories over the years... dred pullings, Alpha male drunks challenging, complete disrespect for personal space...
It's a testament to our dedication and what we represent not to impale people like that guy with the finger.

it would be too easy to grab them by the throat and put the fear of god into them....
