The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Post-release)

They just had to add a love interest for legolas with force, didnt they?

Well, they did need enough material for three movies after all and it's like Orlando Bloom has been all that busy since PotC3 so he could use the work. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that the whole romance of Legolas thing was in part due to the studio wanting to add a love story to the mix, probably figured that they needed that to try to get more women to see The Hobbit.

Tauriel is already proving to be pretty bad ass, and I'm not just biased because I've already made her costume...:p

I love that her and Legolas have a thing. And maybe I am biased as my bf costumes as Legolas...>_>...

But...

I think this middle part of the trilogy certainly contains some of the best bits of book ,or at least many of my favourite parts of the story anyway and this trailer promises to make it look fantastic. Its going to have a pace that’s way above that occasionally plodding jog of the first film.Interestingly it looks as if it will finish roughly before the “Battle of the Five Armies” begins, which is just as well as the destruction of Esgaroth is going to look pretty spectacular as a climax as it is.
I read “The Hobbit” as a boy and as a bit of a wanderer I always wanted to be able to visit darkest Mirkwood and PJ makes it look wonderful haunting here. The Taunting of the spiders by Bilbo is a plus though I could never quite fathom what “Attercop” meant, and the barrel ride looks very exciting ,at least in comparison to the book. And Beorn really looks terrifyingly savage in both trailers ,at least what little you glimpse of him.
Can’t help wondering just how beautiful the Arkenstone will have to be to match my image of it and just how massive Smaug looks here. He’s certainly far larger than I ever imagined he would be and very sinuous and Cumberbatches voice sounds marvelously wormy and slyly right.
And despite what the purists might say I’m now delighted to be able to see what Gandalf gets up to every time he disappears in the book. Looking forward to this autumn and the darkening nights. First “Gravity“, next “Thor: The Darkworld” and then this. Happydays.

The tension between Thorin and Thranduil was awesome... Even in such tiny snippets Lee Pace is playing that elf king like an ace.

Bilbo's approach to Smaug was incredibly heart felt and such amazing acting. That could have seemed campy so easily. Bravo for casting and directing here. This is not a movie that's going to rely on CGI.

Your bias is forgiven. *hehehe*

Agreed that the line from Thranduil was just to lure more females into a movie whose book had none. And I'm fine with it so long as it's one of those subtle forbidden sort of things and not some Romeo/Juliet sub-plot that takes over the story.

It was great to have Arwen and Aragorn's romance take center stage in The Two Towers a bit, even though it was a bit too kissy kissy, because that was us getting to see an interpretation of a romance actually written. Anything more with Tauriel and Legolas than an implied interest and we'll be skirting WAY too close to fan fiction. We all know where we can go get that sort of thing, it doesn't need to be in the (semi-official) movies.

I'm getting pretty excited about the film, myself. I have a feeling it's going to be my favorite of the three. Yes, they've taken liberties, but we all knew they would. I don't mind Tauriel in the slightest (in fact, the more I see of her the better I liker her), but I do hope they keep the romance to a minimum. I don't understand why studios seem to think every darned movie needs a romantic sub-plot.

What I'm getting really excited for at the moment is Bard the Bowman. He was always one of my favorite characters from the book, and I was really irritated when I saw the first pictures of Luke Evans in the role, but as time goes on, he's really growing on me. So much so that at the moment I'm planning on making a Bard costume to wear to the premier. In fact, this was the primary reason I joined the forum yesterday at long last (after several years of lurking without a membership) - because I'm trying desperately to find a material to make his coat on the cheap, and I figured this would be the best place to get advice about it.

Anyway, this trailer was top notch, and I can't wait until December!

I definitely don't want the romance clouding anything. I'm just being silly and I do think her and Legolas are quite cute...but that's the silly girl side of me talking :p!

I hold the books very close to my heart, but the movies are here to be a thrill ride. It wouldn't be an epic if it didn't have a little bit of everything! And even Tolkien himself said he always wanted to go back to the Hobbit and add certain things. He had so much left to do before he died. Luckily he left us with a masterpiece to work with on our own terms!

A couple of observations on the trailers verses the original story. It appears the whole “Beorn told of the quest” by Gandalf and Bilbo has disappeared in favour of them being chased out of wood by him instead. At least, that’s what the clips suggest, it could be a clever mislead but I doubt it. Which is a shame as the story introductions of the dwarves in pairs had a lot of charm to it and was a favorite of mine, but I guess they don’t want to cover the same ground twice. Having seen the first film only the once I could have done with the recap on the dwarfs ID but then I struggle with Snow Whites. The wait for the extended DVD should solve that little problem.
Also the sheer increase in the size of Smaug means Bards yew bow and black arrow have gone and been replaced by a huge catapult/ crossbow. I have to agree I would not have bought into the idea that one tiny arrow in the armpit would have done the job after seeing the trailers. A small tactical nuclear device is perhaps more appropriate.
Lots of other scenes seems to be action enhanced as well, most notably the barrel ride sequence, but thats all to the good I think.
And sadly I’ve remembered the Arkenstone has already been glimpsed in the first film. It was a small yellowish saucer like lump which looked nothing like I had imagined it to be, glowing brightly in the rock. Which is why I had forgotten it. It was that disappointing. I hope that when Bilbo gives it a polish it will be much improved.
Tauriel certainly adds a layer to the Elven / Gandalf quest in Mirkwood. Its this side of the story I find most interesting as it could bring so much to the thats "new" to the mythology. The Hobbit ends so quickly after the Battle of the Five Armies that Gandalfs quest is just briefly commented of at Rivendale. This one will perhaps more of a rival to The Two Towers in terms of action.

Well, for me, Smaug is the highlight of the story, and I get the feeling we'll see his part in the story concluded in this film. Big battle or not, the third film will be hard-pressed to top Middle Earth's last dragon.

I believe the bit with the crossbow/scorpion/thing is actually in a flashback of Dale. The city around it looks fairly un-devastated at the time, and the guy using it definitely isn't Bard.
That being said, it may strain credulity for Bard to take down such an enormous creature with an arrow. But then, it sort of strained credulity for me in the book as well, so I'll take it. This is fantasy after all.

It is and I agree, from a narrative standpoint it is much more elegant and symbolic for the lone archer to take down the might Smaug.

Might I add that Legolas was noted to have taken down a Nazgul in Fellowship:

A dark shape, like a cloud and yet not a cloud, for it moved far more swiftly, came out of the blackness in the South, and sped towards the Company, blotting out all light as it approached. Soon it appeared as a great winged creature, blacker than the pits in the night....

Suddenly the great bow of Lórien sang. Shrill went the arrow from the elven-string. Frodo looked up. Almost above him the winged shape swerved. There was a harsh croaking scream, as it fell out of the air, vanishing down into the gloom of the eastern shore. The sky was clean again. There was a tumult of many voices far away, cursing and wailing in the darkness, and then silence. Neither shaft nor cry came again from the east that night.

Also, you're all forgetting that one thing...

The Black Arrow of Bard was said to never fail him. The arrow originated from the Lonely Mountain and was passed down through his family. It had a special property about it. It never missed the target and Bard always retrieved it.

Also, let us not forget about the soft spot on Smaug's stomach. Dragon's stomachs being the weakest part, apparently. His entire stomach had been encrusted with the jewels he laid upon for so many years, save for a very small spot. Bard having the black arrow and being a very skilled bowman, could not miss his target.

I’ve certainly no issue with good old Leggie shooting down a winged beast of the Nazgul, given that he can also dispatch such large armoured creatures as Oliphaunts with such aplomb as well. But the flying monsters that Melkor spawned at least seem to be of a manageable size to a single warrior.
One of my favorite parts of all in LOTR ,both film and the radio series, is Eowyn’s slaying of the Witch king on Pelennor Fields and I’ll even admit to that slight lump in the throat every time I see or hear that entire scene, its such a rarely written heroic part for a fair lady to play. But I never for a moment doubted in her ability as a shield maiden to slay both the Nazgul and his nightmarish ride, large as they were.
But Smaug ,even as the last of the Fire drakes , looks in these trailers far vaster that I ever imagined he would be. I always pictured him to be in size and shape rather like a scarlet cousin of Verminthrax (courtesy of “DragonSlayer” ) probably because he’s perhaps the most definitive dragon we’ve had yet as a screen character. Its hard to judge the scale I know but even he looks like a puny reptile god set against Smaugs kiaju like proportions.
It seems we are really talking the Death Star of all film Dragons here and so I find my credulity that a single arrow ,however dependably shot by Bard, can actually take down a sky monster of that magnitude somewhat stretched.
Saying that ,if that bare hollow in his left breast where his foreleg is flung wide turns out to be just under two metres wide and therefore somewhat similar to a certain thermal exhaust port, then I guess I really will just have to go a long with it.
Regardless of that point , given the newly reported cost of the Hobbit films, it seems PJ has truly almost needed Smaugs mountain of gold to produce it all. But I don’t doubt for a moment it will all look as magnificent on screen as Smaug himself will. Now if only they’ll do a slightly cheaper radio version so I can listen to it whilst I paint, I’ve almost worn my old BBC LOTR tapes out.

I don't think Smaug is Kaiju size o_O....

You realize his proportions, when he comes around the corner, are set up against a hobbit...right?? The smaller size of the dwarves, as well, doesn't help with proportion.

And he's a DRAGON! He's about as big as a Skyrim dragon. His head is just fatter.

Again, it's fantasy...extend your imagination a little...sheesh. And despite the size of the beast, if there's a target that can be hit and you're a master bowman with special instruments at your disposal...it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I don't know if I have much of a problem with the single arrow killing him. Size wise, look at it this way, if someone shot a sewing needle through your heart, it would kill you. If that unprotected patch on his breast just happens to be at the exact place where the arrow could penetrate the flesh and muscle, miss the bones, and go straight into the heart--I don't see why it couldn't kill him.

God I hope this is good. The first was decent, but for w/e reason, felt a bit "off". Though I can't figure out why. I LOVED the LOTR trilogy though.

I felt the same way. It was cool to see everything fleshed out , but Like you said, I wasn't really excited about it. I'm hoping this tickles my fancy ;)

When I read the book, I was utterly disappointed with how Smaug died though. They journey all the way to Erebor, and then I expected a huge confrontation...but Smaug was only waken up and leaves. Only to be shot by someone already in the area.... Yeah that was anticlimactic to me. But I am very curious about how the footage will be.
