As an expert in all things
Fly-related, allow me to provide some detail:
Going by various sources, it appears that there were four Telepod props constructed for
The Fly:
1. Telepod 1.
2. Telepod 2.
3. Telepod 2 (damaged), used in the final sequence in the movie, where the front of the pod is disintegrated.
4. Telepod 3/prototype.
Telepods 1 and 2 have some slight variations in detail, and are not identical, as some people believe. And, of course, the prototype version has the solid door and additional "clunky" components.
Various sources have said that the pods were all destroyed after filming, but this is apparently not the case. Cronenberg himself says in the 2005 DVD's audio commentary that one of the surviving pods ended up in production designer Carol Spier's backyard, and has been refurbished and featured in exhibits of props from his films.
The Telepods built for
The Fly II (allegedly based on a single photograph of the originals) have several major differences in detailing when compared to the originals. In the 2005 DVD commentary for
Fly II, Chris Walas seems unsure as to what exactly happened to them after filming.
The pods seen in the Universal show--which I have some photos of--are not screen-used. They were recreations based on photos of the originals (and, a few years back, the movie pods' reference photos and the blueprints for the Universal versions were up for sale on Ebay--I'm still kicking myself for not getting them).
Now that sideshow has the Fly license, and is releasing some awesome Brundlefly and Martinfly statues--

--I really, really, really hope that some scaled-replica Telepods are in the pipe.
